A dry-stacked rock hearth supports a Charnwood freestanding wood stove, which was carefully chosen to fit the scale of the surroundings.
In the living room, the team raised the firebox, cladded the hearth in a tactile plaster finish, and installed a floating limestone bench that wraps the column. On the left (unseen) is integrated firewood storage, and a cozy reading nook sits on the right. "The bench was designed to be used as a social space/lounge, and is well-used," says Coffey. The wood beams and red brick were scraped and stripped many times to remove the silver paint and reclaim a natural state.
Wood tones and earthy textures warm the reimagined living room. Much of the art were gifts that the couple bought for each other or pieces by mutual friends; the Mickey Mouse painting is by New Jersey–based artist Dylan Egon. "We like to bring some of the city into the country," says Lauren.
A lot of experimentation went into the fill for the Beanie Sofa, also designed by Edwards Anker. She ultimately settled on lentils after experimenting with buckwheat, coffee beans, and other legumes. "We found that lentils were the right consistency, and shape, and size for the scale of the sofa," she says. She combined "one long bean bag" with wood skeletal support, which helps sitters to maintain healthy posture. It’s also an excellent spot to stargaze through the skylights.
In the winter, the glass facade collects heat from the southern sun, and in summertime, interior shades/curtains cut 50% of the solar heat gain.
The home's windows usher in plenty of natural light, while a crisp white color palette creates a calming, minimalist aesthetic. French doors separate the living area from the apartment's master bedroom.
Masterfully styled by acclaimed interior designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, this one-bedroom apartment is located in a classic 19th-century brownstone and blends historic architecture with chic, contemporary design.

The home's furnishings and decor reflect the couple's personal style, with a blend of midcentury modern and Scandinavian-inspired pieces.
The living room also features floor-to-ceiling windows, an original marble mantle, as well as a wood-burning fireplace.
Bold, saturated tones contrast beautifully with the metallic finishes and neutral colors that characterize the furnishings in the living room.
