    @rorockettdesign
    RO | ROCKETT DESIGN is a full service architecture and design collaborative interested in improving, re-imagining and creating spaces, landscapes and environments. We aim for our projects to provide and evoke the spectrum of experience from utility to simple joy; places that we want to return to over and over. Our design philosophy is centered around the belief that spaces need to be shaped, lit and clothed in a way that can dynamically mediate an occupant’s relationship with the surrounding site, both near and far. We have a specific focus on the proportion of spaces, the use and registration of natural light throughout a room and the manner in which materials lend character and tactility to a place. Our studios live in Los Angeles and San Francisco, however they function as one, thinking and producing interactively and seamlessly in real-time on all projects.
  • Lundberg Design
    @lundbergdesign
    Lundberg Design is a San Francisco-based twenty person architectural firm founded by Olle Lundberg in 1987 that does work for private and commercial clients throughout the United States. We specialize in high-end modern design, with no particular emphasis on any particular building type. While the core of our practice is architectural, we remain committed to providing design at many levels and are often involved in product, landscape, graphic, and sculpture design. Our signature style tends to be characterized by sculptural form, simply and elegantly executed, with a firm belief in the importance of the carefully thought out detail. We also have our own dedicated 4,000 sq. ft. metal fabrication facility for custom design work and experimentation. All of the design work is centered on the qualities of materials – how they can be plied, bent and cut to produce a visual and tactile result. We are a firm that loves the physical qualities of the objects we create. We are located in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, in a 1933 mattress factory building. It is a perfect building for the kind of firm we are – raw concrete walls and exposed timber trusses, with high volumes and enough square footage to house our architectural practice, fabrication shop, and even a work-week apartment for Olle. The practice has always been very diverse – we have designed homes, restaurants, wineries, corporate headquarters, distilleries, hotels, apartment buildings, bars, lobbies, and even San Francisco’s bus shelters. We describe our style as “nature-inspired modernism,” and we strive for elegant, simple solutions in our work. We like materials with substance – wood, stone, steel; materials with heft and texture – really the opposite of veneer. For us the making of architecture is a collaborative act; between ourselves and especially with our clients – while we aim for poetry we also pride ourselves on making buildings that work very, very well.

  • Benjamin Graindorge
    @benjamingraindorge
    Parisian designer Benjamin Graindorge is self-deprecating but completely content in his chosen métier, professing that “learning is freedom.” His enlightened state derives from time spent in Patagonia as a student—a period when he considered dropping out of design school—and a later sabbatical in Japan. Before his travels, Graindorge admits he was more interested in the image of an object than its relationship to its user. Following his worldly design education, as well as a yearlong stint with renowned furniture designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, his work has taken on a new dimension. It’s still ethereal—spy his ceramic vases and lamps for Moustache, which ripple and bubble across an otherwise smooth surface, or his limited-edition art pieces for gallery Ymer & Malta—but it is ultimately grounded in a humanistic expression of scale and tactility. “For me,” Graindorge says, “the perfect assemblage is the human body.”

  • Sculptures Jeux
    @sculptures_jeux
    Sculptures Jeux and its philosophy are based upon an eclectic mixture of tactile, visual and perceptive emotions in the revelation between daily dimension and sculpture. Can creative power and functionality express themselves in the same project / object? Bernard Vuarnesson and his wife Ariane thought so: after Ariane completed her Art studies at the Louvre School, and Bernard graduated at the Ecole Supérieure du Bois and the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris, they both embraced this principle by founding Sculptures Jeux in 1973 and giving life to “playful sculptures” in interior furnishings.
  • molo
    @molo_studio
    Led by Stephanie Forsythe + Todd MacAllen, molo is a design and production studio based in Vancouver, Canada. Balancing between the realms of art, design and architecture, molo products and projects are grounded in space making and range in scale from tea set to museum. The design of molo products stems from Forsythe + MacAllen’s architectural exploration. They are inspired by the concept of smaller, tactile objects having true potency in the experience of a space. By working across a range of sizes, Forsythe + MacAllen discover how furniture can heighten the sense of human scale and experience in architecture, or how furniture and product design benefit from thinking in the larger context of place and space making. Hands-on making has always been fundamental to Forsythe + MacAllen’s design process. Ideas pass from mind to hands to material and back again, ingraining a tactile sense of materiality, construction, space and experience. This process has developed to include experimentation with factory production, in close collaborations with manufacturers. It is a way of working that leads to happy accidents and discoveries, inspiring design improvisation and original thinking. molo’s award-winning soft collection, comprised of flexible space partitions, lighting, seating and table elements exemplifies their exploration of production process and experiential space making. Recognized for poetic beauty and pragmatic innovation, softwall and softseating were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art for their permanent collection. molo and the soft concepts have also been honoured with the prestigious Danish INDEX Award, for design to improve life. Forsythe + MacAllen began working together in 1994 at Architecture school. Constructing a number of houses and small-scale objects, Forsythe + MacAllen won several international competitions for design projects and conceptual ideas, including Grand Prize in the Aomori Northern Style Housing Competition, juried by Tadao Ando and Jean Nouvel. The Aomori submission would later evolve into the waterfront Nebuta House, a museum dedicated to its namesake festival. These early projects and ideas have become molo’s foundations. Since its formation in 2003, molo has assembled a dedicated team and grown into a thriving collaborative design and production studio. Additionally, molo has an extended family of specialized manufactures, consultants and contractors that they work with in a beautiful endeavour to bring imagination to fruition.

  • MOS
    @mos
    The first thing to know about MOS is that we are a collective of designers, architects, thinkers, and state-of-the-art weirdoes. The two principals, Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample, teach at Harvard University and Yale University while maintaining the practice. We work all over the world, designing private houses, institutional buildings, urban strategies, research, books, installations, and other projects that are less easily categorized. We really don't know exactly when MOS started, but it was sometime in 2003. At first our name was !@#?, which we quickly found was too difficult to use because 1. you couldn't pronounce it and 2. you couldn't get a web address. So eventually we drifted towards MOS - an acronym of our names and a shared desire to be horizontal and fuzzy, as opposed to tall and shiny. We began our makeshift office around a large table and began working through a range of design experiments - a make-believe of architectural fantasies, problems, and thoughts about what we would be building if we could only get the work. Today, as we've grown, we continue to operate around one large table as a small experimental office that works closely on each project through playful experimentation, serious research, and old-fashioned problem-solving. Through our work we engage architecture as an open system of interrelated issues ranging from architectural typology, digital methodologies, sustainability, structure, fabrication, materiality, tactility, and use, as well as larger networks of the social, cultural, and environmental. This process of participation and inclusion - radical inclusion - allows MOS to operate, producing and inflecting environments at a multiplicity of scales.

  • Papaver Vert
    @papaver_vert
    Patty Benson started Papaver Vert in 2007 making her small apartment shared with her husband into a small creative studio in Northern California. Based on form, function and bold color, Patty's work utilizes the time consuming technique of crocheting and wet felting wool to create tactile pieces with a contemporary twist. Learning how to crochet a few years ago, she immediately found a medium that combinedher love of wool with her love of home decor. Feeling that home accessories shouldn't just be limited to ceramic or glass, and that felted wool doesn't have to mean something old-school, she loves the idea of taking the ancient technique of felting to design something entirely new. Patty loves that wool is a renewable resource and she stands behind a non-mass produced sensibility. Each piece is lovingly handmade in her studio and she figures the more attention put into the craft, the better the quality, the longer it will last and the less need to buy more, more, more.
  • Sebastian Scherer
    @sebastianscherer
    Aachen-born designer Sebastian Scherer embraced the value of less from a young age. “My first apartment was in Mies van der Rohe’s house,” he recalls, “so I started dealing with the principles of Bauhaus early.” After developing a passion for furniture design at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, where he studied under Karel Boonzaaijer and Jan Armgardt, Scherer relocated to Berlin and set up his own studio in 2010. Bearing the indelible mark of van der Rohe’s influence, his minimalist pieces toy with our perception of depth through clever use of light, color, and material. Comprised entirely of colored glass, his Isom series of hexagonal side tables appear to flatten with distance, evoking an isometric drawing of a cube. Functional yet strikingly visual, Scherer describes them as the “perfect combination of form and function.” - The original ideas in our design process always launch an extensive journey of discovery. While searching for the best materials and the perfect production processes, NEO/CRAFT constantly considers the enjoyment and pleasure that a table, lamp or everyday object should evoke – each day of the year, and for decades to come. A certain material may trigger an initial design idea. But choosing the right material also lends products a unique tactile nature, ensuring that their quality endures over the years and that they never lose their inherent beauty. Innovative production processes, meanwhile, open up exciting and surprising new opportunities. NEO/CRAFT develops products from top-grade raw materials, which are processed in highly innovative ways. Their form is often deceptively simple – after all, it’s the details that make every object unique.

    I am a third generation artist and have been getting my hands messy in one form or another since my mother put me in my first drawing classes at the age of eight. Before dedicating myself full time to my art I spent two decades working in luxury fashion in New York. Inspired by the varied textures, intricate drapes, and color palettes of the designers I had the opportunity to work alongside I seek to similarly create art that elevates and transforms the energy of a space with vibrant colors, the sensation of movement and tactile experience to match the visual .My paintings are layered, both literally and metaphorically. Each painting begins with the written word. Journaling on a blank canvas, I write about people, places,, fantasies, dreams, and feelings. Though this psychic output may not be visible in the final product, it sets the energetic direction of each piece. I work with a variety of tools, including putty scrapers, rollers, sponges, cloth, and even my bare hands and feet, creating layers of rich color, bold lines and, ultimately, paintings that are both compelling and accessible.
