  • Rudolph Schindler
    @rudolphschindler
    Rudolph Schindler was one of the first wave of modern architects to make their names in America. Born in Vienna, Schindler studied with architectural luminaries Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner, and in the early 1910s came under the sway of Frank Lloyd Wright. He came to the US to work under Wright, which he did in 1918. Wright sent him to Los Angeles to oversee work on his iconic Hollyhock House. He stayed in the city, and in 1922 constructed one of the foundations of Californian modernism, the Kings Road House in West Hollywood. He lived there with his wife and another couple (Richard and Dionne Neutra would later live there with him), making use of many outdoor rooms, a pair of sleeping porches and large studios for each resident. He was deeply committed to the interaction of indoor and outdoor space, a pursuit which defined much of his career. All told he designed some 400 projects, many of which were, and still are, in Southern California, 150 of which were completed in his lifetime.

  • Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
    @ludwigmiesvanderrohe
    Without Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), there would not have be the International Style we know today as the impetus for mid-century modernism. Born in Aachen, Germany, Mies (who was born Ludwig Mies and adopted his mother's maiden name, Rohe, in 1921) worked, in his early years, in the office of Peter Behrens, which employed Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Hans Meyer, and Peter Grossman at the same time as well. Inspired by the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Mies lay his first monumental foundations in the early 1920s with an office building and skyscraper in Berlin (though, of course, they could have been placed anywhere), both sheathed in glass. His 1929 Barcelona Pavilion--from which also comes the Barcelona chair produced by Knoll--became iconic of the International Style and its use of modern materials (like glass, steel, and, here, marble and travertine) meant for any and all locations. Like many German modernists, Mies immigrated to the United States during the Nazi reign and found his home in Chicago. In the U.S., he created American masterpieces like the S.R. Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Seagram Building in New York, and the Farnsworth House, just outside of Chicago. Though he passed away in 1969, his legend, like his influence, continues to live loudly.

  • Watershed Materials
    @watershed_materials
    In 1978, David Easton founded Rammed Earth Works and began to fashion the foundations of what would become the modern rammed earth movement. Today Rammed Earth Works is a consulting and artisan construction firm specializing in the technologies and formulations of stabilized earth across the globe. Beginning in the mid 1970’s, lead in large part by Watershed Materials' sister company Rammed Earth Works, the practice of rammed earth began to experience a renaissance. Builders around the world refined the methodology and revived a lost art. Rammed Earth went from a status of “what?” to “wow!” It is beautiful, energy storing, low carbon, and durable. Watershed Materials had the idea to capture the beauty and sustainability of rammed earth and squeeze it into the size and shape of the common concrete block. More people would build with earth. The planet would be better off.

    Led by Stephanie Forsythe + Todd MacAllen, molo is a design and production studio based in Vancouver, Canada. Balancing between the realms of art, design and architecture, molo products and projects are grounded in space making and range in scale from tea set to museum. The design of molo products stems from Forsythe + MacAllen’s architectural exploration. They are inspired by the concept of smaller, tactile objects having true potency in the experience of a space. By working across a range of sizes, Forsythe + MacAllen discover how furniture can heighten the sense of human scale and experience in architecture, or how furniture and product design benefit from thinking in the larger context of place and space making. Hands-on making has always been fundamental to Forsythe + MacAllen’s design process. Ideas pass from mind to hands to material and back again, ingraining a tactile sense of materiality, construction, space and experience. This process has developed to include experimentation with factory production, in close collaborations with manufacturers. It is a way of working that leads to happy accidents and discoveries, inspiring design improvisation and original thinking. molo’s award-winning soft collection, comprised of flexible space partitions, lighting, seating and table elements exemplifies their exploration of production process and experiential space making. Recognized for poetic beauty and pragmatic innovation, softwall and softseating were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art for their permanent collection. molo and the soft concepts have also been honoured with the prestigious Danish INDEX Award, for design to improve life.
