Amsterdam-based contributing editor Jane Szita took the train to Ghent–three hours away, but a very different Franco-Flemish culture. While touring Van Everbroeck's house, she took time to revisit Jan van Eyck's 15th-century painted church altarpiece. "Flemish painters' works have a depth of color artists had never achieved before," says Szita. "Ghent was the perfect place for an assignment; one could argue that the city was the birthplace of the modern color palette."

The Scholten & Baijings Studio for Design was founded by the designers Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings in the year 2000 in Amsterdam. Dutch designer Marcel Wanders is a master of all mediums. Born in July 2, 1963, he studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven—which has also produced designers like Dror Behshetrit, Tord Boontje, Bertjan Pot, and Piet Hein Eek—and came onto the design scene in 1996 with his Knotted chair for Droog. Since then, he has plates and pillows for B&B Italia, tubs and sinks for Boffi, lamps for Flos, and stools and chairs for Magis. Today, he is the art director and co-owner of Moooi, founded in 2000, and has broadened his reach into interior and architectural design for stores and hotels around the world as well as private residents in Jakarta and Amsterdam, among others.

X+L stands for xander vervoort and leon van boxtel, amsterdam-based designers working together since 1987. Studio X+L is founded in 1996 with its focus on interior design for private homes, corporate spaces and gardens, as well as stage design. Every now and then single objects and small series of products are produced in a limited edition.

Photographer Hotze Eisma was born and raised in Amsterdam. "I was named for my grandfather, who lived in a small village in Friesland, which is a nothern province of Holland that has its own language. Even for the Dutch, my name is uncommon," he says. "While shooting the Friesland residence of Paula Leen (July/Aug 2012), I overheard her daughter Lotte asking in Frisian, 'Is Hotze there?' It felt like coming home!"

Led by Mara Skujeniece, Studio Skujeniece designs furniture and interior products. Central to Mara’s work which takes much of its inspiration from her Latvian origins, is the tactility of material, honesty in expression and a well thought-out process. Among other projects, the studio was commissioned to design the tableware for de Bakkerswinkel bakery/cafes in Amsterdam and a Moroccan ceramic collection ‘Made in Fez’ for Butterfly Works, Amsterdam. Gijs Bakker (Amersfoort, 1942) was trained as a jewellery and industrial-designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the Konstfack Skolen in Stockholm, Sweden. Bakker's designs cover jewellery, home accessories and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces and exhibitions. He worked and works for numerous companies: Polaroid, Artifort, HEMA, Van Kempen & Begeer, and recently for ENO Studio in France. In 1993, Gijs Bakker founded together with design critic and historian Renny Ramakers Droog Design, a Dutch collection of designers, products and information. Together with Ramakers, Bakker is the selector and art director of all products within Droog Design. Bakker also teaches for more than 40 years at different schools, among others the Delft University of Technology. After teaching at the Design Academy Eindhoven for more than 15 years, Bakker is now head of the Masters department, IM. Together with Italian gallery owner Marijke Vallanzasca Bakker founded the Chi ha paura...? (Italian for who is afraid for) foundation in 1996. With Chi ha paura...? (CHP...?) Bakker wants to show the international design world that a piece of jewellery is more than a decorative fashion accessory. CHP...? challenges the fear for the contemporary jewellery. Frederik Roijé was born on June 14, 1978, in the eastern part of the Netherlands. He graduated in 2001 from the renowned Design Academy in Eindhoven. Here his preference to interior products was already visible. During his studies Frederik did his internships at prestigious design studios such as Piero Lissoni in Milan, and Marcel Wanders in Amsterdam.
