  • Soma Water
    @somawater
    Soma Water began at founder Mike Del Ponte’s home, when he went to serve water from a plastic filtered pitcher, only to realize that it was not attractive enough to set on the table. After attempting to pour the water in a wine decanter—and spilling—Mike decided it was time to design a water filtering system that was also beautiful.

  • Emeco
    @emeco
    In 1944, Wilton Carlyle Dinges founded the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) in Hanover, Pennsylvania utilizing the skills of local craftsman. During WWII the U.S. government contracted with Emeco to make chairs that could withstand water, salt air, and sailors while still being lightweight and strong enough to last for a lifetime. Aluminum was the obvious choice, and Emeco named the chair with a number: 1006, though most know it today as the Navy chair. Emeco believes in being sustainable by making products that last, and each Emeco chair is built to last 150 years.

  • Dyson
    @dyson
    Founded in 1992 by Sir James Dyson, Dyson Ltd is a technology company which designs and manufactures vacuum cleaners, hand dryers, bladeless fans, and more. Known for innovation, invention it took 5,127 prototype to develop the now renowned Dual Cyclone™ technology and the first vacuum that didn't lose suction. The DC01 became a global best-seller and today you can find Dyson machines in 45 countries. James Dyson attended London’s Byam Shaw art school but painting beautiful objects wasn’t enough. James wanted to make, and the Royal College of Art allowed just that. James studied architecture, but instead of colonnades and cladding, robust marine engineering was the order of the day. He developed a flat-hulled high-speed landing craft and, with it, his passion for engineering. Pretty soon, he’d also developed a new kind of wheelbarrow—one with a big fat ball that didn’t sink into mud and chunky feet for stability. All the while learning to take risks, make mistakes and use frustration as a fuel for creativity and solving problems. During the five years it took to develop his first vacuum, James was also battling. First to convince other manufacturers to embrace his new technology. Then to protect his invention when they copied it. It’s enough to give you a complex. And it did. James’ experience informs the way Dyson works today.

  • Brent Kendle / Kendle Design Collaborative
    @brentkendle
    Kendle Design Collaborative designs homes that speak to your heart and your place in the world, whether you live in a forest, waterfront, prairie or desert. Kendle Design Collaborative builds homes from materials desirable for their inherent beauty and low maintenance, and that tell the story of their special place in the world. Affirming that our designs represent the best in function, craft and timeless design Mercedes Benz chose two of our homes from thousands they considered, to be featured in the company’s 2015 European marketing campaign. Our commitment is to design a home, where, around every corner, you find something wonderful. Where, every day, you say to yourself, “I want to live here forever!” A home that brings you joy. THE IMPORTANCE OF JOY For me the number one attribute a successful home should have is that it brings its owners and their guests Joy. JOY, what brings us Joy is different for everyone. I feel my primary job as an architect is to understand enough about my clients, about what brings them joy, to embody that in the design of their new home so they feel it every day they are within it. This Process starts having conversations, asking questions and questioning answers until I am inside their head enough to understand their priorities, their values and most of all WHAT BRINGS THEM JOY. WHAT SETS KENDLE DESIGN COLLABORATIVE APART In a word AUTHENTICITY. What we practice is Regional Modernism. It’s not a “style”. It’s what we are passionate about, it’s what we believe in, it’s what we know and it’s in our soul. When you look at our website you won’t find Mediterranean, you won’t find Tuscan or French Country. It’s not who we are. The homes we design are in harmony with nature; they celebrate their context and reflect the unique values of the individuals we design for. WHY? Because when you design in this manner you transcend Style, you give the home roots, a reason for being what and where it is – you create timeless living architecture.

    There are familiar types of creativity, to be sure. But it’s not always about being artful. Or expressive. It’s not about being born with certain gifts, or validated by others. Industry West is about supporting and mobilizing people who strive to be creative, whether it’s at work or at home. The whole world needs to achieve its creative potential. So we are the tipping point. We will push creativity into the mainstream where it belongs. That’s what keeps the fire in our belly at Industry West. The non-stop thrill of being creative, sharing creative, and supporting creativity in others. It’s why we like to gorge on new ideas. Why we have wanderlust, and friends all over the world. Why we’re willing to bet big on rising talent. And why our furniture feels strong enough to withstand the nonstop activity associated with creative people, doing creative things in big, creative ways. We are Industry West: Create. Share. Repeat.

We believe in the active involvement of our clients throughout the process of design, and seek to create a final product which reflects this. • Rick Polito
    @rick_polito
    Rick Polito spent a childhood summer in a 40-foot trailer he describes as “fluoride green, inside and out” and came away with little affection for the mobile housing form. He only had his eyes opened to its potential when he came across the Trailerwrap project on a bike path eight blocks from his Boulder, Colorado, home. That gleam of steel and glass and other exciting models he discovered on the forefront of mobile-home design were almost enough to make him forget a second summer in a 50-foot expanse of wood paneling and green shag carpet.

    A seasoned designer whose distinguished tenure for Herman Miller resulted in the award-winning Ergon, Equa, and dot-com-synonymous/simply ubiquitous Aeron chairs (with Don Chadwick), Stumpf (1936-2006) not only knew enough about offices to be authoritative in their dismissal, he knew a lot about everything. Having previously authored The Ice Palace That Melted Away: Restoring Civility and Other Lost Virtues to Everyday Life, Stumpf’s next manuscript concerned what he called “the arts of daily living”—a maddeningly broad topic that he approached with both wizardly acumen and childlike curiosity.

  • Lundberg Design
    @lundbergdesign
    Lundberg Design is a San Francisco-based twenty person architectural firm founded by Olle Lundberg in 1987 that does work for private and commercial clients throughout the United States. We specialize in high-end modern design, with no particular emphasis on any particular building type. While the core of our practice is architectural, we remain committed to providing design at many levels and are often involved in product, landscape, graphic, and sculpture design. Our signature style tends to be characterized by sculptural form, simply and elegantly executed, with a firm belief in the importance of the carefully thought out detail. We also have our own dedicated 4,000 sq. ft. metal fabrication facility for custom design work and experimentation. All of the design work is centered on the qualities of materials – how they can be plied, bent and cut to produce a visual and tactile result. We are a firm that loves the physical qualities of the objects we create. We are located in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, in a 1933 mattress factory building. It is a perfect building for the kind of firm we are – raw concrete walls and exposed timber trusses, with high volumes and enough square footage to house our architectural practice, fabrication shop, and even a work-week apartment for Olle. The practice has always been very diverse – we have designed homes, restaurants, wineries, corporate headquarters, distilleries, hotels, apartment buildings, bars, lobbies, and even San Francisco’s bus shelters. We describe our style as “nature-inspired modernism,” and we strive for elegant, simple solutions in our work. We like materials with substance – wood, stone, steel; materials with heft and texture – really the opposite of veneer. For us the making of architecture is a collaborative act; between ourselves and especially with our clients – while we aim for poetry we also pride ourselves on making buildings that work very, very well.
