A Thoughtfully Updated Hillside Home in L.A. Lists For $5.12M

Built by midcentury architect Albert P. Martin, this historic home comes with killer views of the Silver Lake Reservoir, not to mention an incredible 17,262-square-foot lot.

Known as The Martin Residence, acclaimed architect Albert P. Martin originally designed this three-bedroom, three-bath home for his own family in 1952. The 3,515-square-foot home is remarkable for its refined midcentury style mixed with state-of-the-art updates, thanks to an extensive renovation completed by Los Angeles firm The Archers in 2017.

The hillside home includes multiple outdoor living spaces, including a wraparound deck, landscaped grounds, and a two-car garage/workspace.

The architects preserved the home's historic floor plan, along with various other original elements, such as the concrete fireplace and painted tiles designed by the Martin.

The entrance showcases the home's clean midcentury lines.

While particular attention was paid to the architectural material palette of the residence, the team thoughtfully integrated 21st-century additions, including a new entertainment room, as well as a separate, multi-purpose living space. An expansive guest property, studio, and sauna were also added to the site.

The open floor-plan is anchored around the original concrete fireplace.

The wood-paneled ceiling is surrounded by walls of glass. The decorative window screens are actually water-cut aluminum copies of the original plastic ones.

The terrace off the main living room features spectacular views of the surroundings.

The beautiful view of the Silver Lake Reservoir.

The dining area sits just off the kitchen.

The updated kitchen is bright and airy thanks to expansive glazing that includes skylights and clerestory windows of stained glass.

Wood paneling is found throughout the home, creating an authentic midcentury vibe.

A spacious screening room is one of the home's new features.

Aerin Olsen Table Lamp, Antique Brass
Solid crystal is shaped into a hexagonal prism for sculptural brilliance and glow.  Designed by Aerin Lauder, the lamp gently refracts the light from its tapered geometric column, which is capped with gleaming antiqued brass for contrast.

Another one of the home's highlights is this brightly tiled bathroom.

The pool house has been designed by Taalman Architecture.
