    @tom_downs
    Tom Jones is a Bay Area travel writer and author of guides for Lonely Planet and Wilderness Press. His research for "Airports 101" involved no travel–and thankfully no airport limbo time. Downs spoke with the behind-the-scenes people who influence the way we get from point A to point B. "Everything is manipulated, down to the mood of the traveler will experience on a plane."
  • Grant Gibson
    @grant_gibson
    Grant Gibson is an architecture writer living in Farnham, England. Leaving behind a cold, miserable day, Gibson found himself having an impromptu barbecue on the balcony of Christof Meili and Farzaneh Moinian's modern home outside Zurich, Switzerland. "It turns out I was a little overdressed." he reports. "I realized I wasn't going to require the wooly overcoat and the heavy cords when Christof met me off the plane wearing a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. "
  • Maija Louekari
    @maija_louekari
    Maija Louekari was born in Oulu, Finland in 1982. Her designs for Marimekko exhibit a marked sense of location, time, and space. She has portrayed both the crowds of metropolises as the fabric Hetkiä and traditional Finnish landscapes as Kaiku, in a highly vivid manner. Her expressive line drawings and large planes of color combine to create a strong impression of three-dimensionality.

  • Adrian Gaut
    @adrian_gaut
    Now living in New York City, Portland, Oregon born Adrian Gaut took up photography after originally studying as a painter. As a student he found inspiration in the rich tradition of minimalism in 20th century painting, which informed his early photographic explorations of architecture. While his architectural work still rests at the foundation of his oeuvre, his subject matter now encompasses anything and everything from cars, planes and spaceships to landscapes, still life and portraits. Despite the wildly diverse assignments, there remains a dedication to the power and graphic simplicity established in those early photographs.

  • AVA
    @ava1647
    Vivek Gupta refers to himself as a chef who does a lot of cooking, cooking of ideas and on some occasion’s food. Being an enthusiast right from college his flair for people and passion for design led him to jumpstart to what we call a “STARTUP” in today’s lingo. Thus, AVA design studio was formed in 1984 to bring the craft of interiors, architecture and urban planning together in a single workspace. His work tends to bear a design vocabulary that is open to interpretation of experience, or he says “Think of my projects as savouring a dish, you give me an egg and instead of an omelette I will present a souffle”. His style constitutes a bit flamboyance, with a hint of imperfection and is yet fundamental, allowing the users to enjoy the built from their divergent perceptions. A dash of colour, a court, a silhouette of light, change in materials, a skewed plane or some deflection add a certain momentum to his architecture.

  • Emily Merrill
    @emilymerrill
    In these days of easily accessible plane travel, Emily Merrill feels honest and diplomatic in saying that her heart is with the east coast and her home is in California. She has a voracious appetite for traveling and discovering stories. It is an obsession that fuels her photography. She's based in San Francisco, a city of such wonderful diversity that walking a few blocks on any given day can be considered an adventure. She also loves the adventure of visiting places that she's never been. The new experiences and people she encounters are the inspiration of her work. Shooting a lifestyle advertising campaign is every bit as exciting as photographing the moments of marriage ceremony or taking a portrait of an expecting mother. They are all stories waiting to be retold in a beautiful image.

  • Elvan Arolat
    @elvanarolatfredrick
    Ms. Arolat comes from a family of architects. Born in Turkey, Ms. Arolat’s mother, father and brother, Emre Arolat are accomplished architects. Her greatest inspiration is her mother Saziment Sayilgan Arolat, who is a pioneer for women in architecture in Turkey. By entering the field of interior design, Ms. Arolat built upon her exposure and experience to the disciplines that comprise the work of an architect — engineering, physics, geometry, drawing – and took them to an even more artistic plane. Her degree in hotel and restaurant management provided her with a solid and practical grounding in business and hospitality. She went on to study interior design at the Parsons New School for Design in Paris and New York, where she further honed her skills in the human and artistic aspects of interior design, as well as the technical tools needed to transform a concept into a reality. Ms. Arolat has worked on a wide range of residential projects, from pieds–à–terre in Manhattan and private villas in Turkey to every space and room in several luxury hotels. Leveraging her background in restaurant and hotel management, Ms. Arolat has also created the interiors for several restaurants in New York and Istanbul. She has completed designs for multiple world-class hotels. These projects included full hotel interiors,: the lobby and reception areas, as well as hotel bars and restaurants, spas and saunas, outdoor spaces and pools, and every detail inside individual guest rooms. She also designed the interface between the hotel lobby and a premium retail concourse to create a seamless experience for hotel guests and shoppers alike. Two of her most recent projects are the spectacular Hilton Museum Hotel in Antioch, Turkey, the St. Regis Hotel in Maçka, Istanbul, and the Palmarina Bungalows in Yalikavak-Bodrum, Turkey. Ms. Arolat’s influences come from countless sources. Walks through New York City. Museum visits with her daughter. Dinner discussions with her brother and father. Nature around the world, sunsets, water, forests. Color. And people, whomever she encounters, from lifelong friends to strangers in the city streets.
  • Christopher Kurtz
    @christopher_kurtz
    Christopher Kurtz (born 1975) grew up in the small, remote, middle- America town called Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Excelsior Springs, far from American art and design hubs like New York or Los Angeles, is also the same birthplace of noted sculptor/ furniture designer, Donald Judd, a coincidence that Christopher quite enjoys. Christopher studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and received a BFA in sculpture from Alfred University in Alfred, New York. After college, he went on to work as the studio assistant to artist Martin Puryear, who is the subject of a recent retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. While working with Puryear, Christopher refined his wood working skills and began maturing as an artist in his own right. Kurtz has gained national attention with his sculpture and is in several public and private collections. He has received numerous grants and awards, including the prestigious Louis Comfort Tiffany Award in 2005. Kurtz is represented by Matin gallery in Beverly Hills, California. www.matin-gallery.com In 2005 Christopher married the American glassware designer, Deborah Ehrlich, and set up his studio in the Hudson Valley of New York State. Kurtz has always had a passion for furniture and began experimenting with some designs. The result is a new collection of seating just out in 2008. Christopher Kurtz Studio offers a unique product. The furniture is all hand made, while utilizing some small scale production techniques. Kurtz has said of his work, "I am interested in moments where the handmade is replaced by production-- and when the pendulum swings back to the handmade due to needs that production can not meet." Some of the chair parts are made with very sophisticated tools like the computer numeric router, while other parts, like the chair seats are carved with hand planes and spoke shaves. "I believe in using whatever tools are necessary to achieve the best result- and old world hand tools are a big part of that for me." In his furniture, one can find subtle references to historical moments in art and design, ranging from Ancient Egypt to the Shakers to the Danish Masters- all while maintaining a modern thread that is specific to Kurtz.
