    @ronan_and_erwan_bouroullec
    Ronan Bouroullec (born 1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (born 1976) have been working together for some ten years. Their collaboration is a permanent dialogue nourished by their differing personalities and shared perfectionism. In 1997 they presented their “Disintegrated Kitchen” at the Salon du Meuble in Paris and were spotted by Giulio Cappellini, who gave them their first industrial design projects, notably the Lit clos (Closed Bed) and Spring Chair. In 2000, Issey Miyake asked them to design a space for his new collection of A-Poc clothes in Paris. Then came the decisive meeting with Rolf Fehlbaum, chairman of Vitra, which resulted in their conception of a new kind of office system, Joyn, in 2002. This was the beginning of a special partnership which has borne fruit in numerous projects, including Algues, the Alcove Sofa, the Worknest and the Slow Chair. Since 2004, the Bouroullecs have also been working with Magis, for whom they have designed two complete furniture collections, Striped and Steelwood. Finally, they have worked on several types of textile wall systems, such as the North Tiles, in close collaboration with the Kvadrat brand, for whom they designed a new Stockholm showroom in 2006.

    F R A M E Y O U R S E L F The 8th Annual Downtown Film Festival L.A. Architecture and Design Series The series is about buildings, objects, artists and aesthetes and the emotional connections that tell their stories. It is also about the processes that create our real and imaginary worlds. It showcases Architecture through the creative process of the built and adapted natural environment, individual structures and their history, the form and it’s relation to and presence in cinema as a character and as a setting for other artistic expression. Design is explored through our relationships with beautiful and functional objects, the practical arts and skills within cinema and television production, progressive representations of visual art and finally graphic design in kinetic and static forms on screen and off. The festival will be held at Regal L.A. LIVE Stadium 14, A BARCO Innovation Center from September 21-28, 2016. The programming and related events at satellite venues are a mix of nostalgia, what’s new and what’s next, putting good use to DTLA and The Arts District as an experiential context. dtlaff.com /DowntownFilmFestival @dtlaff

  • ReForm School
    @reform_school
    After about 10 rough drafts, and page after page of babbling, it seemed we were writing a novel instead of an “about us” page… We wanted to talk about how we were two high school friends who always dreamed of opening our own shop, and how it took YEARS for it to finally happen. How, after so many let downs & disappointments, we finally found the perfect spot to set up school. We thought we would mention that we were perfectly happy with our little brick & mortar and never really planned on starting a website but also never anticipated (not in a million years) the overwhelming response we would get from people all over the world. A web shop seemed like the logical thing to do, considering not everyone can make it down to Silverlake.. We definitely wanted to talk about how sustainable design is a huge focus for us, and that green living is important to us, not only in business but in our personal lives as well. We wanted to be eco-friendly without being too in-your-face about it. The last thing we wanted was to be another shop selling all things hemp & bamboo ( not that we don't love hemp & bamboo). We really wanted to point out how much we love and respect all of the artists and crafters whose handmade wares fill us with inspiration. One of the greatest things about having a shop is being able to support these talented folks and all of their creativity. But mostly… mostly we wanted to say THANK YOU… thank you so much, to everyone who has supported us. When we opened our doors we just hoped (and prayed) that people would enjoy our products as much as we did. Your kind words and encouragement have made ReForm School a dream come true for us. We still get excited every time we get an email from someone wanting to be added to our mailing list. You will never know how much it means to us and we hope you continue to enjoy the shop as much as we do. (Hey look at that… our “About Us” page is finally done!) xoxo,Billie & Tootie

  • Bruno Taut
    @brunotaut
    Bruno Taut was an early modernist architect and urban planner. After studying and doing apprentice work in architecture and construction, Taut started his own firm in Berlin with his brother Max. He wanted to marry the fine arts and applied arts, and amongst his notable early work was the Glass House, a 1914 pavilion for an exhibition in Cologne. He went on to work as the architect-in-chief for the German city of Magdeburg from 1921-24 and joined a group of forward-looking influential architects known as "The Ring" in 1925. The rise of the Nazi party forced Taut to leave Germany first for Switzerland, then for Japan, and finally for Turkey. There he taught in the architectural department in the Academy of Fine Arts and designed many buildings. He was one of the early modernists to strive to incorporate local character into his modernist thinking and when so many of his contemporaries were so enamored of white, he was a liberal user of color. He died in Istanbul in 1938.

    Nancy Kennedy Designs Weaving has been my passion and vocation since 1990. When I first learned to weave, I wondered why I hadn’t discovered it long before. In middle age, I finally knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I guess that makes me a “late bloomer.” Now I’m in no hurry to “grow up,” as it might spoil the creativity. Rugs have been my primary focus from the beginning. Over the years, my style has evolved to the current contemporary designs you see here. I have been showing them at fine craft shows around the country since 1999. To make a very brief artist’s statement: I weave “art underfoot.” In addition to weaving professionally, I have taught weaving classes at The Ink People Center for the Arts weaving studio in Eureka, California, and also workshops at the Mendocino Art Center in Mendocino, California.
  • Fatboy
    @fatboy
    Once upon some time, there was this Dutch bum that lived under a bridge that was near a lantern that was on the corner of a narrow street that lead to an open park with dogs chasing balls and sticks thrown by regular ordinary dog owners that do not sit on the grass because it is a quite moist type of grass and they don't want to soil their khakis. On a certain sunny morning under that very same bridge this Dutch bum, who shall remain nameless because his mother might find out, found an old empty bottle of hard liquor right beside his old rusty bicycle that he used as a pillow. “Tough luck” one might say, because a full bottle of hard liquor would have been the nicest breakfast since his last supper. Nevertheless, he considered himself lucky, since he was a positive-minded man who always looked at the glass as half full, although the glass was always half full with poison, most of the time. Right before he threw something at his girlfriend to wake her up, he realized there was a really old-looking, thin scroll of paper inside the empty bottle, that turned out to be not so empty after all. It was the first time he ever found a message in a bottle, and he didn't even know about that song by The Police since the only Sting he knew was from a bee. When he finally found a way to get the scroll of really old-looking paper out of the bottle, like a monkey that finds out that he can reach the ants deep in the hole of a tree trunk by using a twig, he discovered that the scroll was covered with doodles, sketches, and a lot of text that looked like hieroglyphics to him, although he had never dated Cleopatra or even visited Mexico to actually know what hieroglyphics look like. After carefully studying the newfound information with a highly sophisticated microscope that he borrowed from a drunken professor from his elementary school, he knew he had found something big. Yes, this scroll of really old and thin paper, probably lost by some type of ancient alien visitors from outer-space design schools, would make a new life for him. The contents revealed the blueprints of a design object that he intuitively believed could take over the world like any James Bond movie villain. However his dream would not be to rule and dominate the world, he wanted to make it a better place with his design, and bring new hope and peace to mankind. He immediately dumped his girlfriend, married the queen of Finland, and started his own design company under that very same bridge, with rats as his loyal, hard working employees. Some of you might think this is weird, and no wonder. It's not exactly normal, but what the hell (didn't you see Ratatouille?). After testing his cosmic design on all of his bum friends, he launched his design on the Dutch market in 2002 and gave it the name 'Fatboy® the Original.' The world would be never the same again.The rest is history... and still in the making.

    How we work The aim of our work is to hand over an object that meets the requirements set at the beginning in a touching and intelligent way. Beauty and uniqueness are welcome side effects of this. LISTEN AND BE CURIOUS We approach every task with an open mind and love new challenges. Our experience from different and complex construction projects makes it easy for us to understand the project and the needs of the client. Whether brand space or private space, it is all about their further development. EFFECTIVE COORDINATION A good design can only be implemented with intensive and forward-looking project management. This is reflected in the overall coordination of the parties involved as well as in the transparency of our work towards our clients. Finally, the confidence placed in us is to be confirmed. CREATE ADDED VALUE Planning perfectly tailored to the user brings more economic success and personal identification. Added value for the customer is created when a space is created that goes beyond the functional and rational aspects. In addition to the efficient use of materials and products and the intensive integration of the existing building, we always maintain a holistic view and constantly review our actions in light of the initially formulated needs. PLANNING DEPTH A sophisticated and individual design takes a lot of time. Ideas are drawn, tried out, compared and often discarded. Only if we allow ourselves this freedom can we create exceptionally good projects. We like to work across disciplines and rely on an above-average depth of planning in order to be able to implement our ideas economically. Nothing is more exciting than what seems impossible at first!

  • IQ Air
    @iq_air
    Just having graduated from England’s Cambridge University, Frank Hammes, Klaus’ son, decides to join the family business. Having grown up with air purification all his life, he shares his father’s passion for clean air. After successfully promoting, a cabin air filter for Mercedes-Benz automobiles in North America, Frank turns his attention to fan powered room air cleaners. What he finds is a large discrepancy between consumer room air purifiers and large commercial air cleaning systems. While the commercial systems are large and expensive, they are also very effective. The smaller consumer room air purifiers on the other hand turn out to be ineffectual. The decision is made in 1994 to develop a new kind of air cleaning device. It would take Frank and a team of Swiss and German engineers four years of intensive research and development to build the world's most effective line of compact air purifiers. In the spring of 1998, the first IQAir system rolls of the new production line of the Swiss factory. Initially only available in Europe, the HealthPro Plus receives its first major recognition in September of 1998. Europe's leading product testing organization, Stiftung Warentest, finds the HealthPro Plus to outperform all its competitors in one of the most comprehensive air purifier tests ever devised. In 2000, IQAir air purifiers finally become available to the United States. They become an instant success with allergy and asthma sufferers.
