In Chicago’s Lower West Side, editorial director Chelsea Jackson and and her chef husband Arthur renovated their fourth-floor condominium to include a custom Bulthaup kitchen. "We wanted to find a kitchen island that would be light enough to make the room seem large while still standing up to heavy-duty cooking," Chelsea notes. Calls to kitchen retailers were fruitless until Arthur reached the Bulthaup showroom, where the staff suggested he come check out a floor model of the discontinued System 20 kitchen. The stainless steel island, with its precise profile and gas cooktop, was exactly what the couple was after, and they bought it on the spot. A full Bulthaup kitchen—completed with components from the B3 range—would soon become the centerpiece of their new home.

Maria sits at her desk, surrounded by ephemera from her editorial and academic career. She has filled the apartment with Riva’s lighting and paintings, in addition to papers and artwork related to her publishing career, which allowed the photographers to capture accumulated layers of her life. “Our two practices are quite similar,” says Paleari. “We like to leave hints inside a picture, some things that perhaps the reader can see only in a second look, and so every time suggests a new understanding of the space.”

Brent Humphreys is an editorial and commercial photographer, based in Austin, Texas, whose work has appeared in Fortune, GQ, and National Geographic. After an initial Dwell shoot in 2004, Humphreys revisited the Bulverde, Texas, home of Billy and Janette Johnson designed by Lake|Flato Architects. The first shoot captured their triplets at age four. “Obviously, back then the boys were younger, and it was fun but controlled chaos,” Humphreys says. “Going back it was clear the boys are now young men and were very engaged with the process.”

The SPUR exhibition Urban Cartography, which is open until February 6, 2015, documents mapmaking in the past twenty years. Eric Fischer's map, one of the myriad pieces on view, documents where locals and tourists in San Francisco take photographs using geotagged images from Flickr and Picasa. Blue signifies locals, red is tourists, and yellow could be either. "His maps are gorgeous," says Allison Arieff, SPUR's editorial director and the show's curator. "It's not immediately apparent what they are showing but a little explanation goes a long way."

"When I began my career as an editorial assistant, I was trained to always use a pencil on proofs—never a pen! I also eschew a digital calendar for a good old-fashioned paper one, and my schedule often changes rapidly and I travel a good deal, making pencils a necessity when I’m away from my desk. I always look for a sharpener I can stick in my bag—which should be easy to find, but it’s not. I like the Duroplast because it contains the shavings within it, which makes a lot of sense if you are often sharpening a pencil on the subway or otherwise on the go.”

Alexander the Great / February 2008

Leah King, Senior Production Coordinator:When I first started at Dwell, I was fortunate enough to begin with February 2008 redesign issue. The first story that drew me in was "Alexander the Great" about Alexander Girard for the Archive section. I had always been a fan of this bold images and textiles. In my role here at Dwell, I get to see all of the images as they come across my desk and, over the course of time, develop into the final shipment of editorial pages. Holding the images of such an iconic designer was the moment that I realized the beauty and privilege I had to be assisting with the production of Dwell.

Lucy Feagins, The Design Files, Melbourne, Australia: "I work from a home office which my partner built in our little back garden, in the inner city suburb of Brunswick in Melbourne. The room is about four square meters—not huge, but just big enough for myself and our fantastic editorial assistant, Lisa Marie Corso, who sits opposite me. Together we crank out a lot of work in this little space! The best thing about our office is the huge content calendar we have on one whole wall of the studio—this is where we plan all content in advance, and I don't know how we would get anything done without it! It's great to see all the content you're working on in this visual way—so much better than iCal! Aside from this, we've filled the space with things we love: artwork by some of my fave local artists such as Lucas Grogan and Nicholas Jones, and one of my most treasured possessions, a Trashkova gold-plated rubbish bin by local Melbourne design studio Boqil. Very extravagant for a trash can, but it makes me so happy!"
