Last month, we welcomed Zach Klein into the fold as our new CEO—and when you look at his past endeavors, it’s the most natural match in the world. The cofounder of Vimeo and DIY.org, Zach also created Cabin Porn, which spawned from a small (IRL) community in which he and his friends learned to build their own cabins. We’ve even featured his Mission District home on our site. It comes as no surprise that, when asked to share a few of his favorite things, Zach came back with some seriously fun, thoughtful picks. Here’s what he had to say.
"For most things I go to Small Works for custom framing, but Framebridge is excellent when you need it fast and cheap. The quality of their digital prints has impressed me most: you send over a file, and you get a framed, large-format print in return. While we were remodeling we found some old photos of our home in the library archives; I requested hi-res scans and sent them right over to Framebridge."
Each piece we frame passes through at least nine talented people’s hands before we ship it back to you. Every material is cut just for your art; nothing is off the shelf. A (human) designer looks out for your work from start to finish. This is real American design and manufacturing.
"It’s a rite of passage for San Franciscans to bring Heath into their home. We started with this shallow bowl that nicely transitions from set piece to a salad bowl for all those greens you’re growing in your raised bed."
Perfect for serving salads, pastas, sides, main courses — you name it. It’s beautiful enough to stand alone as decoration, but can also be nested with the Large Serving Bowl, Vegetable Bowl, and Deep Serving Bowl. Together they make a truly wonderful gift.
Inspired by the silk cocoons spun by the Bombyx mori moth, the Rich Brilliant Willing Mori Squash LED Pendant is deep lantern shade glowing with warm light. Layers of fine nylon fibers are spray coated around the thin wire frame, forming a durable membrane that has a canvas-like quality.
"Sauna stools are one of my favorite subgenres, and this specimen designed by Aamu Song and Johan Olin for a public sauna in Helsinki is a superb take on Antti Nurmesniemi’s classic."
Nikari’s Arte Culture Sauna stool was created for the Culture Sauna, a contemporary public sauna in Helsinki that opened its doors in 2013. Aamu Song and Johan Olin have designed a beautiful stool, crafted from alder and treated with natural wood oil mixture.
"A couple of years ago we invested in an upholstered showpiece. One dinner party and red wine spill later, we bought this cleaner and never looked back. Just recently we forgave the friend."
The BISSEL® SpotClean Pro™ is our most powerful spot and stain cleaner. It uses a combination of superior suction, scrubbing action and specially formulated BISSELL® cleaning solutions to remove spots, stubborn stains and embedded dirt.
Your plant will feel right at home in its very own pot that appears to be made out of a series of tubes. This planter was made by hand from a textural, rust colored clay. Stamped with the From Sand collection mark. Sizing: 5.25" Diameter, 4" Tall
"The only thing I like more than terra-cotta are shaker pegs. I keep a box of these handy in the garage for that thing that always pops up and needs to go somewhere."
Beautiful birch hardwood shaker pegs with screw end for easy installation. Birch is a quality hardwood with a smooth texture, tighter grain and takes paint or stain quite well. Available in quantities of 10 or 25.
The only wine glass you need. Introducing a new generation of mouth-blown, lead-free and dishwasher-safe wine glasses. From the first touch each Zalto glass distinguishes itself from all other glasses.
"Samsung’s Frame is the TV I always wanted. Completely slips into the background when not in use and makes it easy to put together a room that doesn’t revolve around the screen. We pay the small, optional subscription to have access to collections from many galleries and museums. The artwork changes every day, and my kids and I love to spend breakfast discussing the newest piece."
The Frame is as much a work of art as it is a TV. With revolutionary Art Mode and the power of 4K UHD, the Frame transforms from TV to beautiful, lifelike art that fits seamlessly into your home and decor.
"I started my fermentation hobby with a bone-white ceramic crock and noticed that kimchi paste stained it. Too precious. Switched to this dark-glazed (and cheaper) option, and it’s a workhorse."
The Sauerkrock is a high-quality thick-walled ceramic fermentation crock, inspired by traditional European fermenting crock design. You can use the Sauerkrock to make numerous probiotic-rich recipes like kimchi, pickled vegetables, sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, yogurt, sourdough, condiments and more!
"Recently I discovered that Italy has its own style of playing cards and that Scopa is one of its national games. It’s a fun way to spend time at a table with a few people, and the cards are great design objects, too."
Scopa is one of the two major national card games in Italy. It is played with a standard Italian 40-card deck. Watching a game of Scopa can be a highly entertaining activity, since games traditionally involve lively, colorful, and somewhat strong-worded banter in between hands.
"I moved from New York City to San Francisco about a decade ago, and I have to tell you, it would be hard going back since I’ve gotten used to year-round backyard gardening. I have a couple of these raised beds constructed with knotty cedar and powder-coated aluminum (I painted the legs white)."
At 29" high, this attractive cedar planter is the perfect height for easy growing, eliminating the need to stoop, bend, kneel and reach. It's a generous 10" deep so you can grow big plants like tomatoes and root crops like carrots.
"I have German family living near Cologne, and every trip to visit them I stop at Manufactum to stock up on these sturdy dish towels. Recently they started shipping to the U.S., too."
This dish towel made of strong, absorbent linen combines different weaving techniques. These give the fabric a special look and feel which are enhanced after washing. The fabric shrinks by approx. 5%, although the different weaves shrink to a different extent.
