Design Concept MAC Cosmetics Store (2011) IwamotoScott was commissioned to come up with a cool concept for a future store that would complement by the makeup maker’s hip, fashion-forward personality. The 10-foot torqued column mimics a conventional structural column whose function is to support a ceiling, but here serves as a swirling focal point with an incredible lightness due to the material: super fine 24-gauge steel. With arms that extend some 20 feet, the column does serve one functional purpose: as a light baffle to hide the ceiling’s fluorescent lights. “Fluorescent light is never nice to look at,” says Iwamoto.

Conceptually, the house is split into two distinct volumes with a landscaped strip bisecting the space.

The Brain is a 14,280 cubic-foot cinematic laboratory where the client, a filmmaker, can work out ideas. Physically, a garage—that neighborhood birthplace of invention—provides the conceptual model. The form is essentially a cast-in-place concrete box, intended to be a strong yet neutral background that provides complete flexibility to adapt the space at will. “We told Eric and Meejin we wanted the house to be highly conceptual. They got it right away,” says Patrick.

"Our conceptual approach was that of an ‘adaptive reuse,’ allowing the building to preserve its historic integrity and aesthetics while providing for the needs of modern occupants," says Balbek.

The innovative conceptual framework draws in plenty of natural light, and results in a seamless connection between different parts of the house. The wardrobe in the bedroom is hidden behind the bedhead box.
