Outer Space Landscape Architects refreshed the courtyard with new hardscaping.

The refreshed living room features a collection of vintage furnishings that Kelly sourced from stores in Los Angeles along with new finds from Etsy, West Elm, and CB2.

Live music, a "relax and refresh

In the kitchen the designers paired ancient Sicilian decorated tiles with a refreshed, modern layout.

The architect removed the decorative embellishments, redid the railings, and gave the facade a new coat of gray stucco to simplify and refresh the exterior.

Every room received refinished hardwood floors, and resurfaced walls. New furnishings and refreshed bookcases were added to the living room.

“These rooms are for our friends and family who visit,” Peter explains. “But I think it’s also important to have a place to sleep where you work. You have to take a break and refresh your mind. After a change of ownership, the historic inn was shut down temporarily for a cosmetic refresh by Blackberry Farm Design.

The Rod XL sofa by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani joins custom nesting tables, also designed by Di Stefano and Bongiorni and fabricated by Motta, in the refreshed living room.

In the main corridor of the refreshed 19th century building, you’ll find original mosaic floors and lush potted plants from Alejandra Coll of Asilvestrada Plants.

The rear patio was refreshed with new concrete pavers. A strip of grass accents the perimeter of the pool and hot tub. The boulders by the hedge are all that remain of a previous owner’s rock grotto, which Steve disassembled.

“I wanted it to feel like an old Airstream, just with a refreshed new face. So I decided to start with white and have only one wood tone, walnut,” says August.

The original brownstone exterior was given a bright refresh with Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone paint on the facade and Benjamin Moore Black for the trim, door, balusters, and handrails. The architectural designers also added new windows and doors.

Mass Studio completed the renovation of a 1960s house in Brentwood, California, that came complete with a classic midcentury kidney pool. During the renovation, the patio and area around the pool was refreshed with a lounge area, fire pit, and plants.

Located in Portola Valley, California, this renovation of a William Wurster Ranch house began with a study of the home’s history. Inspired by original photos of the 1950s home, the renovation refreshed its significant architectural past without detracting from its Wurster essence.

In the petite kitchenette, the original orange-tinted enamel of the sink and stove was spruced up with concrete overlay on the counters, a hex tile backsplash, and new brass accents. The original cabinets were refreshed with the same paint color as the interior walls, then adorned with brass hinges and hex-shaped pulls.

"The most challenging part of the design was fusing the old part of the house with the new addition," says principal architect Alex Terry. The character and architectural integrity of the single-level 1950s ranch house was thoughtfully reconsidered during the addition and remodel. The home’s front porch, typical of the period, was refreshed with Ipe decking and railing.

The renovated home maintains its original layout. To refresh the dated appearance of the space, Stonefox added cedar tongue-and-groove panels to the ceiling and refinished the floors. The living room rug is from Creative Matters, the WL Daybed is from Niedermaier, and the circular coffee table is a Tie and Die model from Holly Hunt.

Now, new concrete embellished with a cement tile pad brings "an extra layer of texture when you walk in," says Valencia. Spindles were added to the restored second-floor railing for safety, before it got a new coat of paint. All new lighting makes the exterior more welcoming, as does the refreshed front door, thanks to its new sea foam color.
