Edgeland House, built on a cliff-top lot in Austin by architect Thomas Bercy for lawyer and writer Chris Brown, is topped by a living roof to help it blend into the landscape. The concrete, steel, and glass house is divided into two distinct public and private halves. <span style="font-family: Theinhardt, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;">Tucked beneath a grassy roof covered by nearly 200 species of plants and grasses, the structure is virtually invisible from the nearby street. In fact, the 1,400-square-foot house is so well hidden in the earth that it doesn’t seem to register on the radar of local wildlife either. Tanner Construction got rave reviews from all their references. We were impressed by their budget discussions and their commitment to keeping numbers in view during the entire process. My wife liked that were direct and talked to us without 'contractor speak.' They were a small and dedicated team that lacked the expensive overhead (offices, matching trucks) of large, more corporate contractor companies. Ultimately, we liked working with Tim Tanner and Brad Burgess, our two contacts. There were no middle men, nobody we had to talk to to get to Tim and Brad. We loved the fact that they were extremely hard workers, flew somewhat under the radar, and let their work speak for itself. Our project was a priority for Tanner and they treated it accordingly. Husk is no under-the-radar cafe: It was crowned Bon Appetit's best new restaurant in America in 2011 when it opened. Chef Sean Brock's other Charleston restaurant, McCrady's, skews slightly more towards molecular gastronomy while Husk serves up less challenging takes on Southern fare.

“Good art triggers the imagination over and over. That’s a feature we lost in design.” Jongerius maintains a small client list by choice, though the clients she does keep—Maharam, Vitra, Danskina—are hardly under-the-radar. She’s had the longest relationship with Maharam, her first industrial client. Here, a shot of Foliage, a 2014 design for the NY-based textile company recently acquired by Herman Miller.

Unlike some museums that have recently broadened their scope—and presumably their audiences—to include Latin America, the region has been on MoMA’s radar from the start. In 1931, the museum’s second solo exhibition was on Mexican artist Diego Rivera, and its first show on Latin American architecture, “Brazil Builds,” ran in 1943. “There’s a strong institutional logic to continue that thread,” says Martino Stierli, MoMA’s chief curator of architecture and design, and to explore social and cultural changes “that inform our understanding of the region to the present day.”

The news editor of the website Curbed, Patrick Sisson has written about design and music for several publications, including Pitchfork and Chicago Magazine. Formerly based in the Windy City, he toured the Atrium House, located in the Buena Park neighborhood, for this issue. “The area surprised me,” he says. “Just blocks from Wrigley Field, this historic neighborhood had flown under my radar for all the years I’d been living in Chicago. It was gratifying to find something new.”

What is your favorite American-made object that you own?

“A set of wooden bars and stars my dad made that replicate the design of the Chicago flag.”

Located a stone’s throw from the more curated shops of the Exchange, artisans (both food and fashion) set up shop each weekend for a massive smorgasbord of local flavor. At the Old Biscuit Mill, visitors can pick up everything from organic cheeses and beer, to traditional French and Dutch treats. While the food draws many, the highlights include outdoor market The Lock Stock, where cutting edge indie designers carry everything from locally sourced mohair sweaters to wooden backpacks. An informal and friendly platform for artists and designers to showcase their work, if you’re looking for off-the radar contemporary design in South Africa, this is your best bet.

German engineer Walter Bauersfeld can take credit for erecting the first geodesic dome in 1926, a replica of the night sky that glowed with nearly 5,000 stars. But Fuller’s work popularizing these hyper-efficient structures led to their mass adaptation around the world—more than 300,000 exist at last count. During a teaching stint at Black Mountain College from 1948-1949, Fuller refined synergetic geometry and the dome concept, utilizing a spherical arrangement of triangles to cover more space with less material. Bucky was soon creating domes for the U.S. military (covering, among other things, radar station in the Arctic Circle) and the Ford Motor Company, and popularizing the concept with worldwide audiences at the 1954 Milan Triennale.

"Aaron is a goldmine find for Subports; he is truly a unique, under-the-radar craftsman. Aaron grew up working the land of the Oklahoma plains, and that farming sensibility plays into his wonderful handcrafted designs. No one else on the planet is doing the types of products Aaron is producing. Now based in Brooklyn, one of Aaron Linn's newest creations is a series of desk organizers from logs found in his NYC neighborhood (we know--trees here? Who knew). Each unit takes 4 weeks to hand-carve and features a lazy-Susan base and a built-in pencil sharpener. Looks great with his handmade Reclaimed Floorboard Scissors ("aaronlinnfloorscissors", $30.00) and the Trusted Sentiments Pencils from Et Al., Etc. ("etaletcsentiments", $9.50). Aaron's work is unbelievable and exclusive to Subports."

When Pendl wanted a second home for road trips, Airstream was the clear choice: it matched his own love for modern and industrial aesthetics. He picked the International Sterling model for its especially contemporary interior, what he calls "a sleek...interpretation of that classic Americana style." But there was a hitch: this retro-futuristic dwelling couldn't support present-day security systems.

Due to due to liability concerns, security companies won't typically install their products homes on wheels. Luckily Pendl already had some experience with smart technology systems: "Home automation has been on my radar for quite a while. Initially I was drawn to just the ability of being able to turn things on and off remotely, then I began to play with...[making] a smart home." In 2014 he learned about Wink, an app that lets users manage their smart home devices like Nest, Honeywell, Canary, and Phillips Hue. He set about improving his home in Seattle, first with just a few smart light bulbs then "I organically grew my ecosystem of products from there."
