Golden light floods through the Clerestory windows in the living area, accenting the wooden coffee table from Restoration Hardware and the weathered antique bench the couple scored from Robins Egg Bleu in Winthrop, WA.
Our interior designer wanted to enhance the existing furniture and overall sophisticated aesthetic. To fuse the old elements with the new, we sourced pillows in vibrant colors pulled from the client’s daring, non-representational art. This also gave the space an element of approachable luxury, as opposed to the bare, formal look that it initially conveyed.
The outdoor landscape is brought indoors through the continuation of the red concrete walls and ample glazing.

The team matched and continued the 1960s-era red oak floor into the living room, which gained an entire wall of new sliders from Western Window Systems. “We wanted to preserve the original intent of the house wherever we could,” Dimster notes.
In lieu of a checkerboard effect, Kovel kept his carpet squares all vibrantly verdant. With the bamboo cabinets and countertops the whole space has a pastoral feel. “I wanted it to be like the Bradys’ backyard,” he says.
Fronting Alamo Square Park, the living room’s pitched ceiling creates an expansive space for socializing and relaxing. The Shinomotos have filled their Southern California home with furniture by Taku and pieces by some of the artists and craftspeople whose work they also showcase at their Tortoise shops and showroom. The couple worked with architectural designer Ken Tanaka to remodel the house, once a cramped, two-bedroom rental. A sofa and tables by Taku join Jasper Morrison’s Three Sofa De Luxe sofa for Cappellini. The sliders are by Western Window Systems.

Flor carpet tiles help add color to the neutral palette.
With original steel-framed windows, beamed ceilings, warm wood-paneled walls, and a gracious floor plan it makes for a wonderful entertaining space.
