The living room holds a Mags Soft Low sofa from Hay, a Mara coffee table from Article, and a Jotul woodstove.

Jimmy Brower and Damien Merino are a creative couple with an entrepreneurial mindset—and they created a sun-soaked sanctuary on the Oakland/Emeryville border that’s characterized by lush plant life, quiet nooks, and handmade art and decor.

It’s hard to believe, but this trendy stay was purchased by Kathrin and Brian Smirke at a tax auction for $7,000. While it sounds like a great deal, the 1957 property was abandoned—and it needed to be stripped to the studs and completely rebuilt. The DIY interiors now are teeming with photo opps—from stylish vignettes to an outdoor tub constructed from a water trough.

Linda Hutchins and John Montague hired Works Partnership Architecture to turn a former Portland, Oregon, warehouse and auto repair shop into a versatile live/work space.

A wall of glass provides a strong connection with the surroundings and easy garden access.

The tongue-and-groove vaulted ceiling defines the living space.

Sliding doors connect the space with the outdoors.

The lower level features a bonus family room with a wall of built-in media cabinetry.

Traditional three-coat stucco was used for the interior walls. Furnishings are from Scott and Cooner and Urbanspace Interiors.

The next level holds a living/dining area with a powder room and entertainment area.

Custom wood millwork, polished concrete floors, and some exposed concrete were used for the interiors.

Here, you can see the spatial interplay of private and public rooms across the plan from the main bathroom through the pavilion to the landscaped setting beyond.

The Rod XL sofa by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani joins custom nesting tables, also designed by Di Stefano and Bongiorni and fabricated by Motta, in the refreshed living room.
