Next to a wood-burning fireplace is a setup for the family’s record player and albums. Instead of a standard television set, they use a projector.
“On the first floor, we decided to open the cabins up to views with a floor-to-ceiling window that connects the living area to the sea,” explains Felipe Croxatto. “In the second-floor bedroom, we frame select views through smaller windows.”
Firebrick lines both the wall and floor so that the fire can be lit right on the ground for an ultra-cozy night in.
Canadian Castaway features a simple and rustic aesthetic with a focus on raw materials. "I didn’t want to paint the wood white, for instance," the owner says. "I just wanted to let it age naturally and invite it to mirror the natural world it's now a part of."
"In our living room, we have a fairly large abstract piece from Sally King Benedict that was gifted from her years ago," says Amanda.
A hammock chair in the living room overlooks the wood stove at the center and the sofa against the west wall, creating a cozy living space.
A new wood-panel wall is a focal point in the open layout. The original white oak floors were also refinished.

The living room is warmed by a Morsø 1440 cast-iron stove and features a pair of calfskin folding seats that are original to the house.
A cozy, library-like reading area lies just off the dining area. The wood-burning fireplace has a gas starter.

Chris and Claude put stucco on top of the fireplace's outdated stone. The living room's new expansive feel was achieved through the removal of select walls.
Some of the living room walls were painted with a gray lime wash by Portola Paints, while other walls were finished with Nebulous White by Sherwin Williams. The pink, wall-mounted light is from Anthropologie.
A motley assortment of contemporary local and international art curated by the Detroit gallery Library Street Collective enlivens the hotel.

The skylights in the hotel's lobby were old, dirty, and "a little bit decrepit," according to Goldstein. The updated space is filled with light and buzzing with creativity.
The Great Room is stylishly fitted out with a Holly Hunt coffee table, Stefan Heiliger "De Sede" chairs, Thayer Coggin Lloyd sofas, a Robert James Nantucket Occasional Table, and sconces by Lianne Gold for Ralph Pucci.
The massive, thermally broken steel windows were installed by crane.
The Great Room is anchored by a large granite fireplace crafted by James Hamblin, using locally quarried granite veneer.
Our cozy living room area featuring hand sewn cushion covers and curtains. We bought that East/West sign at a flea market right around the time we first bought the bus two years ago, knowing that it would find a place in the finished home. The black iron pipe lighting fixtures were Ben's idea, paired with an antique plumbing valve fashioned into a dimmer switch.
View from the driver's area looking back. Our floor is reclaimed factory maple from a textile mill in MA. It's rustic, worn, entirely imperfect and we love it. We used every board foot of it on the face frames, wall trim, etc.
Our tiny wood stove is the centerpiece of our bus home and the first thing people comment on! The hearth base is granite we sourced from a yard sale kitchen kart. The brick surround is actually tile reinforced inside with steel square tubing and cement board inside. It's incredibly sturdy! The blue bead board paneling is reclaimed from an old mill building in southern Maine.
The garden room has a built-in bench and free-standing fireplace. This area works as overflow for the adjacent kitchen, which allows people to see the cook in action, yet still lounge. The living room is a bit more removed, located just two concrete steps away.
The home's character has maintained intact by preserving beautiful period details such as the wood-burning fireplace and the vaulted ceilings.
