Windows punch through the exterior to provide daylighting and views of the water and forest beyond. The steel fence is a modern take on the traditional picket fence.
Powers clad the exterior in western red cedar shingles, knowing that they would age gracefully over the years with minimal upkeep. They provide texture and pattern to the roof and exterior walls, which merge at the home’s apex.
The home is surrounded on three sides by forest, and its most prominent facade faces the water. Its unique acorn shape efficiently sheds rain and snow, and creates an architecturally interesting interior space.
The home was originally constructed in 1972, when building codes and permitting allowed for its location so close to the beach.
The town of Vail has enlisted 359 Design's help to produce 32 affordable housing units in the Chamonix Vail project. The modular homes come in five different types and are fabricated in Idaho before being shipped to the site.
Created in collaboration with nonprofit Summit Huts Association, the Sister's Cabin by Colorado Timberframe is a timber ski hut perched atop Breckenridge's Baldy Mountain that can only be accessed by a 3.5-mile trek. Due to its remote location, the retreat operates entirely off-grid. It was built with prefabricated timber elements and SIPs airlifted to the site, and it features a luxurious interior that can accommodate 14 people.
TERA will be made of a plant-based composite that is recyclable and biodegradable. The structure being built next to the Hudson River is a rehash of the MARSHA Mars prototype.
The .66-acre Willow Island sits just off shore in the middle of Putnam Lake in Patterson, a historic town right on the border of New York and Connecticut.
Modern in Montana: a Flathead Lake cabin that's a grownup version of a treehouse.
Lookofsky painted the exterior of the house a bright red tone that pays tribute to the other red, more traditional, houses in the area.
A guest cottage flanks the family's garden. The "casita" has hosted friends, family, and even wildfire evacuees.
Lookofsky placed a trio of windows on the side elevation of the house that frame views of the natural surroundings.
Strategically placed windows and doors open the red-painted pine plywood house to the outdoors and frame views of the landscape.
Red-painted pinewood wraps around the exterior of a tiny house that sits on a slope overlooking the Baltic Sea in the Stockholm archipelago.
Collector's Retreat by Heliotrope Architects is situated at the top of a steep hill, with southwest views and a forest on the opposite side. Outside, a carport doubles as a dining terrace in inclement weather, while the lower terrace with the fire pit serves as the primary focus for summer leisure.
The luxe prefabricated hotel offers an almost off-grid experience and is fitted with a curated collection of Vipp products.
The patio of Collector's Retreat by Heliotrope Architects allows the homeowners to gaze out into a sea of trees.
"The 900-square-foot cabin perches on one piece of granite, projecting precariously over a steep drop-off to afford dramatic eastern views across the valley below," says Isamu Kanda, principal at I-Kanda.
In the shadow of Denali mountain, amid Alaska’s meadows and icy streams, a former teacher and a four-time Iditarod winner calls upon Mayer Sattler-Smith to design a modernist cabin as expansive as the Last Frontier.
Set amidst the mow eastern mountains of Pueblo Eden, this contemporary home was constructed in four months with a prefab steel-frame system clad in low-maintenance sheet metal.
After a 40-year-old pine tree fell over on a Brentwood estate in Los Angeles, the owner let it lie, and the continued to grow from its newfound horizontal position. He decided to incorporate it into a 172-square-foot office and guest house with the structure floating above the tree. Around the perimeter of the butterfly roof is a clerestory that gives the illusion that the roof is floating.
The home was built in 1980, Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects renovated the project in 2013.
The Element House by MOS Architects stands on pylons, creating the illusion of it hovering over the desert floor. Nine thermal chimneys, one of which can be seen right, channel hot air out from the interior living areas.

Designed by the Canadian firm Pelletier de Fontenay in collaboration with architect François Abbott, the residence is located in the rural town of Hartley in Quebec, Canada.
The gable roofs and the overall shape of the buildings are reminiscent of the vernacular architecture: barns, farms, and sheds.
The home is located on a plateau in the area's rolling, hilly landscape.
The three volumes house the three wings of the home: a communal area with a kitchen, dining, and living area; a master suite; and a guest suite.
The project’s unique challenges—a tight budget and steep, difficult terrain—led architecture firm _naturehumaine to a creative solution that gave the house its delightfully sculptural appearance. Making the first floor’s envelope slightly narrower than the top one’s saved money while minimizing the amount of excavation required.
The exterior walls of Casa Quinta da Tília are painted the same color as the tin roof finishing, which is made from local Japanese cedar wood. The broad skylights in architect Pedro Maurício Borges's design not only draw in the wonderful Azores sunshine, but also frame the majestic, parasol-like crown of the linden tree.
On an island 20 miles off the coast of Maine, a writer, with the help of his daughter, built not only a room, but an entire green getaway of his own.
Architect Jesse Garlick’s rural Washington vacation home references its rugged surroundings. The steel cladding has developed a patina similar to the ochre-red color of bedrock found in the area.
The exterior combines recycled brick, radial sawn timber, and galvanized roof sheeting. "Materials were selected to meet the clients’ brief that the house fit within the cognitive idea of an old shed," explain the architects.
The father of architect Greg Dutton wished to build a cabin on the family farm, located within Appalachian Ohio and home to 400 heads of cattle. One of the most significant of Mies' works, the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, was built between 1945 and 1951 for Dr. Edith Farnsworth as a weekend retreat. The home embraces his concept of a strong connection between structure and nature, and may be the fullest expression of his modernist ideals.
In the tiny town of Auvilliers, France, architect Jean-Baptiste Barache designed an elegant cedar-shingled home with an A-frame construction.
