Habour House is a powerful composition of architectural form and material to ensure it sits comfortably within the beautiful grassland setting of the East Coast. Situated on an estuary, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, the extraordinary location provided a special opportunity to create the best possible response to the landscape. The panoramic views and local climate were main driving principles, which informed the architectural design response. The design’s spatial magic lies in the guiding principle that all primary spaces of the residence were to be oriented to frame the captivating 270-degree views the site has to offer. Housing a multitude of floor-to-ceiling glazed panes, the rear maximizes the vistas of the pristine tranquil waterfront and infuses sunny serenity into the home. Throughout the day, light and ambience alter within, travelling with the colours of the water and sky – from clear blue in the morning to fiery tones at sunset.

Developed to enhance the drama of the space, the floating steel stairway is a design focal point that is visible from most areas of the open concept main floor and the key feature to the reception of the home. While functional by nature it was an opportunity to introduce a graphic sculpture-like statement to the residence that played well with the client’s contemporary and minimal aesthetic. The steel staircase animates the space by creating a sense of suspended movement and was designed adjacent to double height glazing to incorporate a photogenic interplay of light and shadow.

Fresh rustic, comfortable modern and clean lines with a twist – there is a down-home feeling to this residence that is full of soulful personality. Geared toward creating a family friendly haven, this design stays true to the traditional farmhouse style but naturally embraces a contemporary expression. An undeniable vestige to days of old, the ample glazing, vernacular materials and open floor plan are incorporated elements that bring this home to the modern day. Tall windows are strategically placed around interior spaces to provide optimal views out toward the Atlantic Ocean in the distance and provide natural light to key living areas. The simplistic, linear floor plan is complimented by a feature staircase that serves as a functional showpiece. A material palette of vertical wood siding, metal paneling, fair faced concrete and timber details bring a modern focus to the formwork. The resulting design is a balanced blend of rustic and refined, superbly highlighting all the best parts of the modern farmhouse style.
