Listed for $2.65M, This Bavarian-Style “Snow Haus” Near Lake Tahoe Is the Perfect Alpine Escape

Overlooking the Truckee River, the chalet gets its name from a white stucco facade that blends into the snowy winter landscape.

A European-style chalet known locally as the "white castle" was recently listed just outside of Truckee, California, en route to Tahoe City. Built in 2009, the former bed and breakfast features massive timber beams, custom ironwork, and hand-carved wood throughout the interior. Yet, it's the white stucco facade—designed to resemble packed snow—that gives the home its name and iconic status in the area.

The recently listed "Snow Haus" is located along River Road—a popular route connecting Truckee, California, with the western side of Lake Tahoe. The property was last sold in 2017 and subsequently underwent a three-year renovation.

Inside, wood details abound—including massive timber beams brought in from Oregon and milled on site during the home's original construction. An artisan also hand-carved decorative embellishments into the wood, while another hand-painted snowflakes in a children's room.

Offering just over 4,300 square feet of interior space, including seven bedrooms and six full bathrooms, the floor plan is suited to a single-family residence or short-term rentals. Two of the bedrooms come with en suite bathrooms and one bedroom features an attached bunk room and kitchenette. A 900-square-foot unfinished basement provides additional options for expanding the living area.

One side of the living area features a wood-burning fireplace made from stacked boulders.

Opposite the living area, the kitchen overlooks a dining area/family room. Many of the same details extend into this space, which also features French doors leading to the front deck.

The kitchen cabinetry comes with carved details and custom hardware.

Perhaps the home's greatest appeal—like most properties is the area—is easy access to nature. Located less than ten miles away from popular ski resorts, the property also backs up to land owned by the US Forest Service and sits across the street from two trails running along the Truckee River. Tranquil locations for backcountry skiing or snowshoeing can also be found less than a mile away. Keep scrolling to see more of the home, currently listed for $2,650,000.

All of the home's seven bedrooms feature intricate window trim and other wood details. Here, one bedroom comes with a whimsically shaped door that provides direct access to the exterior.

One of the home's six full bathrooms comes with an igloo–like shower area complete with stone flooring.

The other newly renovated bathrooms come with more traditional finishes.

In one side of the home, a spiral staircase leads down to the lower level. Some of the custom railings were refinished/replaced during the recent renovation.

Another look at the spiral staircase.

The lower level also offers indoor parking for two cars, as well as a large area for gear storage.

Sited on a .51-acre plot of land, the sale also includes an adjacent half-acre lot.

Walkways around the home connect several patios and outdoor areas.

Among the outdoor spaces is a large patio off of the living area and a massive sunken fire pit— shown here at the bottom corner of the home.

The facade is illuminated at night by numerous lights along the exterior.

The "Snow Haus," located at 8989 River Road in Truckee, California, is currently listed for $2,650,000 by Morgahn Grey of Grey Blue Realty.
