Architect: M Gooden Design, Location: Dallas, Texas

From the architect: "Taula House is a single-family residence designed for a multi-generational family in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. The name ‘Taula House’ is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘balance.’ Guided by the Hindu architecture principles of Vastu shastra, this modern dwelling expresses a balance between traditional beliefs and contemporary ideologies of design. Symmetry, directional alignments, spatial geometry, and delicate detailing were all paramount to the design success of the project."

2. Pole Pass Retreat

"We made the space as flexible as possible to allow for numerous potential uses in all four seasons," says architect Tom Kundig. During the summer months, the property is especially lively as the residents take advantage of their waterfront location.

Architect: Olson Kundig, Location: Orcas Island, Washington

From the architect: "Nestled into a dense, wooded shoreline site, this intimate retreat serves as a gathering space for friends and family throughout the year, but takes particular advantage of the temperate Pacific Northwest summers. Located near the main house on a site accessed by boat, Pole Pass is situated to hug the dense woods while directing views out over the meadow and nearby harbor to the Salish Sea."

Architect: The Ranch Mine, Location: Phoenix, Arizona

From the architect: "Sited in an eclectic neighborhood in the foothills of a mountain preserve, Pleats is a new 1,850-square-foot, three-sided courtyard house in Phoenix, Arizona. The foundation of the original house was reused and the space was redesigned to fit the bedrooms, including a master suite that was lacking before. A new, gabled volume was added to take in mountain views and provide an indoor/outdoor great room with a perforated metal patio cover to ease the transition from the strong, sunlit exterior to the interior. A garage and workshop is tucked behind the house, completing the three-sided courtyard."

Architect: Watershedd, Location: Mawgan Porth, England

From the architect: "Sand Dunes is a stunning front line holiday home overlooking Mawgan Porth beach in North Cornwall with unrivaled views out to sea. The house was built using locally sourced natural materials, from the local Cornish stone, reclaimed slate tiles, and architects select vertical black timber cladding. The dark tones of the cladding help the building to blend with the natural colors of the surrounding landscape."
