Architect Eric Olsen has designed his share of sizable homes, but when he got a cold call from a young couple asking if he’d consider redoing their modest ranch house in Newport Beach, his curiosity was piqued. "Their idea was something cool and chic and functional, with no wasted space," he recalls. "And they wanted to keep it single story."
