An Exclusive Look Inside the Health-Conscious House That Put Richard Neutra on the Map

By Kate Reggev
Designed for a quirky wellness professional, the Lovell Health House is an International Style landmark that galvanized Neutra’s career.

Perched above the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, trailblazing architect Richard Neutra’s Lovell Health House was completed in 1929 as one of his earliest solo projects in the city. A precursor to the Kaufmann House, the residence was built for physician and naturopath Philip Lovell and his family; their health-conscious lifestyle helped inform the design. The home would put Neutra on the architectural map. Today, the Lovell Health House is still a private home, but now holds public tours led by one of the current residents.
