The designers were inspired by René’s upbringing in Puerto Rico, choosing Valencia tile from Fireclay to reference the colors and cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, joining it with a custom cane and wood vanity by The Build With Ethan.
The couple's remodel included replacing all the windows and doors, which was a substantial portion of the budget.
Emily purchased the used Brizo Odin faucet in chrome on Offer Up, and a new Brizo Odin beverage faucet to match. The sconce above the window is vintage and the counters are honed Basaltina ($2,934.38).
The white oak bench seating wraps a vintage wood table found on Offer Up. The custom cushions are by Legacy Custom Upholstery in Perennials 'Raffia' fabric in Geranium Red. The wall light is the Schoolhouse 'Gantry Pivot Sconce.'

Emily's favorite vintage 1960's ceramic Arnels mushroom lamp sits atop a custom plywood built-in dresser.
The white oak cabinetry has fronts painted in 'Weekend Getaway' by Benjamin Moore. Cabinets were designed by Emily Kopp and fabricated by JV The New Carpentry.
Emily detailed the kitchen to have more storage than before, thanks to custom cabinetry she designed, and which was fabricated and installed by J.V. The New Carpentry. The backsplash tile is 2x6 Zia Tile in 'Burnt Sugar.' The stove is a Thor electric range and the refrigerator an iio Retro Mod Fridge RM1, both part of the $4215 the couple spent on appliances.
Designed by Birdseye, this A-frame in Vermont maximizes views and ground access to the lakefront. The main structure looks east toward the water with floor-to-ceiling windows, while the secondary volume faces south.
As Nicolás Tovo and Teresa Sarmiento of La Base embraced modular design as part of their architectural practice, they noticed that prospective clients were wary of prefabricated construction. So the duo teamed up with Place, an Argentine prefab builder, to make a proof of concept just outside the Patagonian resort town of Bariloche.
High in the Colorado mountains, this completely off-grid home cleverly fuses art and functionality. Home to a young couple and their two dogs, the eye-catching dwelling showcases the impeccable craftsmanship and creative flair of its occupants. Greg and Stephanie Parham built San Juan Tiny House to include a wavy roof, an angled front prowl, barn wood siding arranged like the rays of the sun, blue ombré shakes on the rear wall, reclaimed materials throughout, and a collapsible front porch, which features a fold-up deck and fold-down awning. On the inside, clever solutions maximize square feet and storage.
With its large covered porch and glazed walls, the Beaver Creek Cabin frames the forest like a picture.
The getaway protrudes like a sculpture from the hillside.
Visual artist Amélia Marta enlisted Portuguese architecture firm Madeiguincho to design a space where she could stargaze, make art, or just sit and think. To create the multipurpose but still economical interior, the designers got inventive with windows and wood.
“We wanted to create a really cozy nook,” says Jones of the new bed area of the apartment. A mirror at the end of the bed visually expands the interior space.
The partitions are moved using guiding tracks in the ceiling. In this apartment, when the partition with the television is moved to the rear, the space becomes a large living room adjacent to the kitchen.
A short, chunky staircase connects the two distinct realms of the studio.

The project was completed entirely remotely. Since then, the husband-and-wife team have moved back to Santiago, where they had met as young architects working for local firms.
An oversized window to the outdoors was a priority for the co-founders, who want their clients to feel connected to nature.
A structure built in a Polish ROD cannot be permanent, nor can it exceed 375 square feet.

A short hall connects the kitchen to the bathroom and holds integrated shelving, a wardrobe, and an electrical box. The open stair treads leading up to the sleeping loft save on space and keep sight lines open.
Matt's brother, Sam, also fabricated the custom steel railing and floating stair treads. Underneath the stairs, a desk is built into the landing.
Friends and family hang out on the back patio. “It’s kind of a fugly house, but we don’t care,” Caleb says.

The perimeter countertop is made from waxed cold-rolled steel. “I like materials that get better with age; this will fill up with color,” Caleb says.
The home’s modest size meant Caleb did not have to worry too much about material and labor costs. For example, all the interior walls are done in plaster, which is three-to-four times more expensive than drywall in Maine.
