Brian Calfano is an accomplished journalist, professor, documentary filmmaker, and author focusing on twentieth-century political and media history. He is a scholar-in-residence for Latakoo, a video management solutions company that works with major news organizations, including NBC Universal, Nexstar, and Charter Spectrum. He also maintains a courtesy appointment with the University of North Texas in the Department of Political Science.
Brian has had a long and varied career in journalism. He was an anchor and political show host for KSNT 27 News, covering political events in markets such as Topeka, Wichita, and Kansas City. In addition, he worked as a reporter and producer for Spectrum News 1 Ohio, producing several political and social issue series. He also served as a political analyst for the same network, offering expert commentary during breaking political news stories.
His work in Springfield, Missouri, included producing and hosting various programs for KOLR10. Notable among these was a one-hour memorable celebration of Missouri’s bicentennial and a 16-part series focused on the U.S. Constitution. He also hosted Morningline, a public affairs radio show on News Talk 560AM KWTO, where he spent seven years interviewing public officials and discussing political matters. Additionally, he contributed as a media panelist during congressional debates aired by KOLR10.
In addition to his journalism work, Brian's documentary, Al Primo & His Eyewitness Revolution, has received multiple awards. The documentary explores the history of television news and its transformation. It won the 2024 Best Documentary at the Golden Nugget International Film Festival in London and several other accolades. The film has also been selected for distribution to PBS stations nationwide. His journalistic achievements have earned him numerous awards, including EMMY nominations and recognition for reporting on political, societal, and educational issues.
Brian R Calfano has served in leadership roles in academia, including as the Head of the Department of Journalism at the University of Cincinnati. His leadership saw the development of key projects, such as a new TV news studio and the creation of a long-form documentary initiative. He has also taught at various universities, contributing to research and academic development.
Beyond his professional life, he is actively involved in charitable organizations such as the ASPCA and Doctors Without Borders. He was born in New Jersey, attended the University of North Texas, and is an ordained deacon in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
