    @sanna_annukka
    Sanna Annukka has created a series of expressive designs full of meaning, telling stories from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. The Kanteleen kutsu fabric depicts forest animals that have, enchanted, gathered to hear the joyful tunes played on the kantele, a plucked string instrument, by Väinämöinen, the main character of the Kalevala. Väinämöinen had made his instrument from the jawbone of a giant pike. The Sampo, a wealth grinding magic mill, is featured in the impressive Taikamylly fabric. The Ihmemaa art print, sold by the repeat, shows the landscape of Kaleva, the Land of Heroes, and Lake Alue, in whose depths a whitefish has swallowed fire fallen from the heavens.
  • Dominic Wilcox
    @dominic_wilcox
    Dominic Wilcox works between the worlds of art, design, craft and technology to create innovative and thought-provoking objects. Wilcox, who was born in Sunderland and is now based in London, received his MA at the Royal College of Art in 2002 and has since been commissioned by people and organizations to think up unique, interesting ideas and turn them into reality. From a xylophone bin to a finger nose stylus, the inventor is the master of repurposing everyday objects. The effects, documented in his new book, Variations on Normal, range from whimsical to surreal to slightly disturbing. Many of the Wilcox's works have a humorous slant and subvert everyday items, turning them into something unexpected. The artist's playful creativity, however, is no joke. His process is long and requires much learning: investigating methods of manufacturing, acquiring new skills or persuading experts to help. Wilcox doesn’t specialize in any one material or technique, instead letting the idea decide. “A lot of my work is based on everyday things and it’s very rare for me to do something in luxury materials," he says. What’s ultimately so fascinating about Wilcox's whimsical, awe-inspiring artworks is the way in which they compel the viewer to see ordinary things in a new light.

    The summer I purchased this gorgeous wooded lot, my niece and I camped out here so I could seek inspiration for the design of a house to build on it. One afternoon, the man who sold me the property gave us a turkey caller he had made. We decided to have an impromptu campfire sing along with this small device for accompaniment. In seconds, we had cause to pause as we heard real turkeys excitedly gobbling their way up the hill to meet us. "What magic is this?" we city girls wondered. But we would soon come to discover that it was perfectly normal life in this enchanted, happy wood. All summer, we listened to great horned owls hoot by night, and we watched ravens and hawks battle for the sky by day. We learned that deer are fans of acoustic guitar and that delicious wild wine berries grow in the sunny patch up by the road. We explored each tiny cave and outcropping. We cracked jokes while we cleared trails and skipped rocks or hunted for old moonshining relics down by the stream. In short, we really lived. I knew then that the home I designed would have to keep me connected to the magical spirit of the nature all around me. (Bug-free and with infinite hot water, of course!) This is where my imagination led me. My hope is that it may provide a constant source of wonder, inspiration, and renewal for all those who dwell here. Happily ever after, Vanessa.
