Architect Charles Moore (1925-2003) was born in Michigan, trained as an architect at Ann Arbor and did some of his first building with the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. After the Korean War he enrolled at Princeton University for a masters in archtiecture, and was drawn to California after he finished. Though he worked as an educator at a variety of top-flight American universities--Yale, UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Texas--his collaborations with the likes of William Turnbull Jr., Donlyn Lyndon and Richard Whitaker at their firm MLTW would prove most fruitful. Together they designed a number of small cabins and houses along the California coast, culminating in the Sonoma County development Sea Ranch. His writing was influential as well, and his book, The Place of Houses, is very well regarded and is still in print.
