  • Frank Desiderio
    @frankdesiderio
    Frank Desiderio, C.S.P., is a priest whose work blends faith, creativity, and service. As a poet, filmmaker, and pastoral leader, Frank’s career has been devoted to using various forms of art and media to help others explore the deeper meanings of life, faith, and forgiveness. His ministry is an invitation to reflect on personal growth, healing, and the power of spiritual connection. As a poet, Frank’s writing serves as both a sanctuary and a challenge for those who engage with it. His poems have appeared in respected journals such as America and Presence, and he has contributed to several anthologies that focus on sacred themes. In Sibling Reverie, co-authored with his sister Mimi Moriarty, Frank captures the bond between siblings and the role of faith in family relationships. His book Can You Let Go of a Grudge: Learning to Forgive and Get On with Your Life offers practical advice on the transformative power of forgiveness. Frank continues to share his reflections on life and spirituality through his Holy Poetry newsletter, reaching an expanding audience of readers seeking deeper meaning in their lives. Ordained in 1982, Frank has dedicated his ministry to spiritual leadership and social justice. His early role as Director of Campus Ministry at UCLA, particularly during the 1984 Olympic Games, set the stage for his lifelong commitment to working with young people and helping them deepen their faith. Later, as rector of St. Paul’s College in Washington, D.C., and Director of the Paulist Center in Boston, Frank focused on serving marginalized communities. At the Paulist Center, he oversaw one of the longest-running weekly hot meal programs for people experiencing homelessness in Boston, reflecting his strong commitment to social justice and practical service. Beyond his pastoral work, Frank has made significant contributions to the media. As executive producer at Paulist Productions, he helped create over 25 hours of documentaries for networks like the History Channel, A&E, and Hallmark. His film The Big Question: A Film About Forgiveness received critical acclaim and sparked national conversations on forgiveness and personal growth. Frank Desiderio’s life is a testament to the power of blending faith, creativity, and service. Through his poetry, films, and leadership, he inspires others to explore the transformative power of forgiveness, trust, and human connection.
  • Alexander Opper
    @alexanderopper
    Bio: Alexander Opper Alexander Wilfried Opper (1972, Pretoria, South Africa) lives and works in Johannesburg, as educator, writer, artist, architect, curator and designer. As a full-time faculty member (since 2007) he designed (2010) and directed (2011-2014) the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) first ever architectural master’s programme in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA). A committed teacher, he promotes a teaching-and-learning approach premised on ‘folding’ the architectural studio into the field, critically interrogating the roles, responsibilities and complicities of architects for and in 21st Century society (see: https://www.academia.edu/22550795/_Productive_Leakage_and_the_Folding_of_the_Studio_into_the_Field_2012_Article_published_in_faculty_newsletter_). In his artistic practice he employs large-scale site-specific interventions and installations to subvert entrenched codes attached to the white cube and question uneven power relationships embedded in, and in-between, various urban conditions. These projects are mostly recorded using photography and video. From 1995 to 2005 he lived, studied and worked as an architect and designer in Berlin. Upon his return to South Africa his One Megabyte House project (completed in Cape St Francis in 2005) was published in a number of places, including in Dwell Magazine (Vol. 8, No. 3, February 2008 (p. 128-9)). In 2006 he made Johannesburg his home and the primary site of his practice-driven research. His artistic outputs and his writings, which have been exhibited and published locally and elsewhere, rely on an approach he refers to as ‘Undoing Architecture’ (see: https://www.academia.edu/21407615/_Undoing_Architecture_2010_double_blind_peer_reviewed_paper_published_in_conference_proceedings_book_). This way of working experienced its germination during Opper’s architectural master’s thesis – Schloß als Materie (English: The Matter of the Castle) – completed, with distinction, at the University of the Arts, Berlin, in 2001. Since 2009 – as an artist – he has produced a substantial body of site-specific, mostly time-based work. The conception and manifestation of this work relies on the simultaneous employment and subversion of his architectural training and background. In 2013 Opper’s debut solo exhibition – Separ(n)ation – completed its run at Goethe-on-Main, Johannesburg (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11lfplrkM1c). More recent examples of his critically self-reflexive artistic practice (2015) are documented here: https://www.academia.edu/34759562/_Derrie_re_les_panneaux_publicitaires_Behind_the_billboards_2016_double_blind_peer_reviewed_paper_published_in_conference_proceedings_book_, and here: http://www.theartistsbook.org.za/view_collod.asp?pg=collod_item&collod_opt=item&ItemID=864 His work is held in the permanent collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) as well as in numerous private collections. He is currently enrolled as affiliated junior fellow in the PhD programme of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, University of Bayreuth, Germany.
