  • AlaModerna
    @AlaModerna
    We are 100% Alabama Modern. In the heart of The Shoals, the flourishing Arts Center of Northern Alabama, and down the road from the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Rosenbaum House is a team of craftsman who love stretching their skills and artistry. For over 40 years we have been handcrafting heirloom pieces of furniture, fireplace mantels, solid wood planking, wall paneling and architectural moldings. One day we decided to tackle a mysterious design we long admired, a lamp designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Like many Wright designs, at first glance the lamp stood out for its simplicity and repose. The more time we spent with the lamp the more captivating and functional it became. We also began to understand the brilliance of the engineering and design involved. Mostly we were moved by the work of art itself -- a sculpture made from wood which day or night brought joy to all who saw it.

  • Artware Editions
    @artware_editions
    WHAT WE DO: Artware Editions opened its doors in 2006 in the heart of New York City’s West Village neighborhood. Since our inception, we have specialized in collaborating with visual artists to produce design objects and are proud to be the only gallery dedicated solely to this theme. The pieces we carry vary widely in medium and function and have only two criteria in common: utility, and a strong visual and conceptual connection to the artists' larger bodies of work. Recent examples include a custom fragrance with Kiki Smith (in production); a Rococo-style mantel clock by Kehinde Wiley (in production); an acrylic console table by Markus Linnenbrink; an entry bench by Helen Mirra; juice glasses by Roy McMakin; silver cutlery by John Gerrard; and table lamps by Katrín Sigurdardóttir. We also feature a thoughtfully curated selection of the best artist-designed functional pieces from around the world, including furniture by Donald Judd; porcelain tableware by Cindy Sherman, John Chamberlain and Arman; a table centerpiece by Roy Lichtenstein; glass canisters by Kara Walker; a sushi platter by Jenny Holzer; and a daybed by Rachel Whiteread. Finally, we are pleased to offer Yves Klein's seminal pigment or gold-leaf filled plexiglass tables for which we work with the artist's estate directly. WHO WE ARE: Rebecca Kong has a background in the academic and gallery-side of the art world. After receiving her MA from The University of Chicago in art history and philosophy, she was Director at Alan Koppel Gallery and then Donald Young Gallery where she worked with such prestigious artists as Gary Hill, Bruce Nauman and Richard Serra, and published on the work of Rodney Graham. She then moved to New York City where she was Director at Peter Freeman Gallery and it was there that she met Mr. Tomlinson. The rest is history. Jon Tomlinson has a diverse background in the arts ranging from owning his own gallery in New York City to working at the largest youth center in the country overseeing an arts/literacy program pairing artists with inner city youth to create photography exhibitions. Prior to moving to New York City, Jon owned Flipside Arts in San Francisco, which specialized in collaborating with mostly Bay Area artists to create functional objects, thus beginning his fascination in the field. He returned to this interest as Director of A/D Gallery in New York City before opening Artware Editions with Rebecca Kong. He has a BA in English literature and philosophy after studying at Michigan State University and Roehampton Institute in London.
