  • Sebastian Scherer
    @sebastianscherer
    Aachen-born designer Sebastian Scherer embraced the value of less from a young age. “My first apartment was in Mies van der Rohe’s house,” he recalls, “so I started dealing with the principles of Bauhaus early.” After developing a passion for furniture design at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, where he studied under Karel Boonzaaijer and Jan Armgardt, Scherer relocated to Berlin and set up his own studio in 2010. Bearing the indelible mark of van der Rohe’s influence, his minimalist pieces toy with our perception of depth through clever use of light, color, and material. Comprised entirely of colored glass, his Isom series of hexagonal side tables appear to flatten with distance, evoking an isometric drawing of a cube. Functional yet strikingly visual, Scherer describes them as the “perfect combination of form and function.” - The original ideas in our design process always launch an extensive journey of discovery. While searching for the best materials and the perfect production processes, NEO/CRAFT constantly considers the enjoyment and pleasure that a table, lamp or everyday object should evoke – each day of the year, and for decades to come. A certain material may trigger an initial design idea. But choosing the right material also lends products a unique tactile nature, ensuring that their quality endures over the years and that they never lose their inherent beauty. Innovative production processes, meanwhile, open up exciting and surprising new opportunities. NEO/CRAFT develops products from top-grade raw materials, which are processed in highly innovative ways. Their form is often deceptively simple – after all, it’s the details that make every object unique.

    An old material with a long tradition relives a renaissance. Old fashioned felt pantoffel? Hence with it! Give me the old-new trendy material in bright colours and modern designs. Since eight years daff – daff produces high quality Merino felt collections. Why Merino? Only pure Merino wool can guaranty brilliant colours. One essential part of daff's corporate philosophy is "Made in Germany" for design, felt production and further processing. To create ordinary things in an exceptional way is the second important fact. Our felt excites, you have to see its colours, touch it and feel the groove. The trendy products of today will be the common ones of tomorrow and so the felt items shall become common in the future and enrich living in style. The third aspect is to motivate the customers to create their own concept. There are about 30 colours available, all shapes and colours invite you to vary and combine. Bright colours and modern design go together with renewable raw material, features like ecological processing and the ability to wash most of the items. The product range includes table sets, table runners, seat pads and seat cubes, two- and three-dimensional decorations especially for christmas and other festivities. Various designs of bags, timers, cases, accessories, keyring pendants and christmas decorations complete the program. There are endless design possibilities in the living and table area and every day we design more.

  • Fat Brain Toy Company
    @fat_brain_toy_company
    The Fat Brain Toys Story The term "garage start-up" is often used to describe companies with humble beginnings - whether they really started in a garage or not. But in the case of Fat Brain Toys, the garage was actually a stepping stone from a mere subterranean beginning. In the fall of 2002, then 10 year-old Adam Carson received a magnetic building toy called Geomag for his birthday. Fascinated with the toy and looking to spend some additional birthday money, he went online to see if he could buy a larger set. Discovering how difficult it was to find online, he suggested to his father, a web developer by trade, that they create their own online store to sell the specialty toy. The rest, as they say, is history! Shipping the toys out of the basement of their home in the small community of Elkhorn, Nebraska, this unlikely online toy store managed to challenge the likes of ToysRUs and Walmart to become one of the largest online retailers of Geomag in the world. Quickly outgrowing the basement, the family moved the entire operation several times before finally settling into a retail storefront and warehouse that they operate from today. The business has grown in other ways too. Beginning with a single online store focused exclusively on magnetic toys, the company now boasts over 5,000 in stock toys, games, and gifts. In 2006, a sister company, Fat Brain Toy Co. began development of their own original line of educational toys. Their first creation, Dado Cubes, has found a receptive market among consumers seeking quality toys that develop design and visual-spatial skills. Dado can be found at finer retailers coast-to-coast, including FAO Schwarz, SFMOMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Highlights catalog, Sparkability, Creative Kidstuff, and many others. In September of 2008, after countless requests from local customers, Fat Brain Toys " The Store" opened to the public. Featuring over 1,500 products in a clean and spacious storefront, the Fat Brain Toys retail store quickly became the "go to" toy store in the Omaha area. In an era where many toy companies have struggled and failed, Fat Brain Toys is proof that quality products, hard work, and Midwestern hospitality can be a truly powerful combination.
  • Alexander Opper
    @alexanderopper
    Bio: Alexander Opper Alexander Wilfried Opper (1972, Pretoria, South Africa) lives and works in Johannesburg, as educator, writer, artist, architect, curator and designer. As a full-time faculty member (since 2007) he designed (2010) and directed (2011-2014) the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) first ever architectural master’s programme in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA). A committed teacher, he promotes a teaching-and-learning approach premised on ‘folding’ the architectural studio into the field, critically interrogating the roles, responsibilities and complicities of architects for and in 21st Century society (see: https://www.academia.edu/22550795/_Productive_Leakage_and_the_Folding_of_the_Studio_into_the_Field_2012_Article_published_in_faculty_newsletter_). In his artistic practice he employs large-scale site-specific interventions and installations to subvert entrenched codes attached to the white cube and question uneven power relationships embedded in, and in-between, various urban conditions. These projects are mostly recorded using photography and video. From 1995 to 2005 he lived, studied and worked as an architect and designer in Berlin. Upon his return to South Africa his One Megabyte House project (completed in Cape St Francis in 2005) was published in a number of places, including in Dwell Magazine (Vol. 8, No. 3, February 2008 (p. 128-9)). In 2006 he made Johannesburg his home and the primary site of his practice-driven research. His artistic outputs and his writings, which have been exhibited and published locally and elsewhere, rely on an approach he refers to as ‘Undoing Architecture’ (see: https://www.academia.edu/21407615/_Undoing_Architecture_2010_double_blind_peer_reviewed_paper_published_in_conference_proceedings_book_). This way of working experienced its germination during Opper’s architectural master’s thesis – Schloß als Materie (English: The Matter of the Castle) – completed, with distinction, at the University of the Arts, Berlin, in 2001. Since 2009 – as an artist – he has produced a substantial body of site-specific, mostly time-based work. The conception and manifestation of this work relies on the simultaneous employment and subversion of his architectural training and background. In 2013 Opper’s debut solo exhibition – Separ(n)ation – completed its run at Goethe-on-Main, Johannesburg (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11lfplrkM1c). More recent examples of his critically self-reflexive artistic practice (2015) are documented here: https://www.academia.edu/34759562/_Derrie_re_les_panneaux_publicitaires_Behind_the_billboards_2016_double_blind_peer_reviewed_paper_published_in_conference_proceedings_book_, and here: http://www.theartistsbook.org.za/view_collod.asp?pg=collod_item&collod_opt=item&ItemID=864 His work is held in the permanent collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) as well as in numerous private collections. He is currently enrolled as affiliated junior fellow in the PhD programme of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, University of Bayreuth, Germany.
