Grind (Chicago, United States) This Chicago workspace shed the drop ceilings and depressing decorations of its former life as a title insurance company to blossom into a coworking hotspot. Benjamin Dyett, co-founder of Grind, which also runs similar spaces in New York, says his team wanted to create a “frictionless workspace” and built an array of desks and conference rooms to accommodate different work styles, all buffered by a sound attenuation system that improves focus. A 22-foot-high ceiling, massive windows and an internal mezzanine provide an airy, open environment, while custom light fixtures from Brooklyn’s MESH Architecture and a chandelier/art installation by RND, made of old phone receivers and staplers recovered from the office’s previous incarnation, provide visual inspiration when minds wander.

Architect Craig Steely designed this house for himself, his wife Cathy Liu, a painter, and their son, Zane, that looks out to the Pacific Ocean from a lava flow on the big island of Hawaii.

Now, a white kitchen recedes from the main space. A long island keeps the working area separate, yet still connected.

The project was completed entirely remotely. Since then, the husband-and-wife team have moved back to Santiago, where they had met as young architects working for local firms.

On Bainbridge Island, Jim and Hannah Cutler created a cabin for reading and working. Sited just steps from the main house, it’s a welcoming retreat that the father and daughter share.

Working within a tight footprint due to building restrictions, the two-story main building includes most of the bedrooms and communal spaces, with guest quarters placed in a separate structure.

This photo, called "Oakland," is a clear nod the to the city's busy working waterfront: perhaps the Bay Area's most industrial port.

"Three elongated blackened timber pavilions form a U shape, encompassing the external courtyard and identifying strongly with the site narrative and notions of a working yard or arena," the architects explain.

A long, narrow rectangle functions as a kitchen, dining, working, and general gathering area. Skylights set at a 90-degree angle to the workstation boost the dynamism in the room and cast a bright glow over the unit's walnut-and-steel seam.

"We did our best to tuck the buildings into the site—the goal was to get up high on a perch. It was a matter of setting that elevation and working back down with the topography," says architectural designer Riley Pratt.

In the bathrooms, a different variety of plaster was employed: Moroccan Tadelakt, selected for its waterproof application. (“You see it in most hammams,” says Grimshaw, who had spent time working in Morroco.)

"This is the 25” version, which is being used by a friend who is a glass artisan and will be working with us on a new project," says Ribic.
