Green and Live House is a minimal home located in Nara, Japan, designed by Akka. The land is surrounded by trees and beautiful scenery, something the architects wanted to expose to the residents by providing large glazings and a balcony. In addition to the balcony, a study is situated adjacent to the staircase which also provide expansive views of the forest. A semi-private courtyard allows the residents to maintain a garden, and seamlessly integrate the outdoors with the interior.

Creating outdoor space in an urban context can be challenging. Relocating outdoor space from the ground plane beyond the building footprint to the roof plane allowed us to replace the yard space lost because of a larger home on site - creating a private space for our clients and semi-private spaces for the in-law suite and auxiliary dwelling along the ground plane.

Hair Salon in Nakazaki is a minimal space located in Osaka, Japan, designed by Shimpei Oda Architect Office. In general customers getting a haircut prefer privacy from the public. However considering the semi-private location of the salon, a glass store front was chosen. The interior floor is finished in the same texture as the material on the driveway – creating a continuous concrete surface that connects and blends the interior with the exterior.

Bestor Architecture, Blackbirds, Echo Park, Los Angeles Blackbirds is a development of eighteen houses embedded in the hills of Echo Park; a progressive solution for high-quality dense housing in a city with little available land. The homes range from 1,200 to 1,900 square feet and are built around a living street; a central courtyard that comprises both landscape and parking areas, and serves as a stage for larger community functions. The placement of the houses in the hills mimics the older wooden houses of the area and deploys a strategy of “stealth density,” combining several houses into a single house-shaped volume. For instance, two free-standing houses are connected by flashing and the roofline creates the illusion of one house mass. Three houses, whose separation is masked, creates the illusion of two houses. This conceals the density of units by maintaining the neighborhood shape and landscape across the site. The community is a blend of private, semi-private, and public space, and promotes a sense of neighborhood by encouraging interaction and exchange.
