"Most clients wouldn't be psyched about it—who knows if I'll be psyched about it in five years." But for now, the house is home to a very happy family.

Although toilet paper rolls are often overlooked in terms of style, they are necessary household accessories. Sabi takes this item and recasts it with a modern look. Featuring a high-quality spring loaded roll mechanism, the Roll is easy to use—attaching and detaching toilet paper can be done in seconds. Unlike other spring-loaded holders, the Roll is a secure and stable option for a bathroom wall.

Once you get about six inches or so, scrunch the hell out of it back towards the knot. Keep repeating this: roll and scrunch, roll and scrunch.

Sheets of hot-rolled steel were used as exterior cladding—as well as for parts of walls and countertops indoors—to heighten the industrial effect. “When hot-rolled steel comes out of the factory, it’s a very even-toned, blue-gray color,” Han says. “But we wanted to have a pattern. So we stacked the sheets of siding outside in the rain, and let it sit there so that the water would create texture.” Putting up the siding was messy, since each sheet had to be carefully dried before installation and then covered with a water-based clear coat to prevent surface oxidation. The result, though, is a quietly mottled surface that Mihalyo says “looks like slate” and will change color over time as dark brown tones begin to appear beneath the basic steel gray. Like the circular windows that seem stolen from the airplanes flying over the house, the steel siding is an architectural element made possible on a small budget only by Han and Mihalyo doing it themselves. As Han exclaims, “Can you imagine specing this out for a contractor?”

The transformation of a 1950s eyesore into an elegant, gallery-like home was a creative challenge for architect Kevan Hoertdoerfer and all involved. The poem “Roll the Dice” by Charles Bukowski is painted on the facade. “It expresses how we felt about the project,” says resident Karen Baldwin. “Everybody roll with it—everybody do their thing.”
