Additions of color in the interior are minimal, but when they are included, they make a lasting impact, such as with this rainbow art piece by local artist Roi James. “Although we had commissioned the piece based on a recent show we went to, I don’t think either of us realized that it would work so well with our [colorful] cookbook display [in the dining area],” Flournoy admitted. Tribeca Family Penthouse Front Studio principal Yen Ha renovated her family’s eighth-floor penthouse apartment in Tribeca by moving walls and tightening proportions, then applying color and pattern, evidenced by a striking floor-to-ceiling bookcase painted in a rainbow gradient.

"Your Rainbow Panorama," Olafur Eliasson, 2006-2011. Eliasson's team created a 360-degree walkway above the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding city, filtered through colored glass that forms a rainbow loop.

The fundamentals of Emmanuel de Bayser’s Berlin apartment toe the line of cool, muted modern design. Yet there’s a trick at play: by adding distinct shots of color, de Bayser gives every room its own richly hued rainbow and, in doing so, creates a personal paean to the more playful side of midcentury design.

The playroom is sound-proofed and features a rainbow of color. "We built the bunks the height of the apartment allowed and customized them to maximize the fun," she says. "Behind the beds there's this wallpaper, I See You by Cavern Home—it's a wallpaper you can create faces on, so the kids are encouraged to draw on the walls." The bedding textile is from Studio Four NYC.

Lautner designed a house that could only exist in a climate like Southern California. He played with the notion of going indoors and outdoors consistently throughout daily life. Mcllwee points out, “Almost every property Lautner designed has common elements of this indoor/outdoor feel.” This seating area in the middle of the “rainbow” arch looks out to astounding views of the canyon.
