For bedrooms that have windows, it can be challenging to place the bed so that it doesn't obstruct views. At this home with clerestory windows, the platform bed in the master bedroom can sit comfortably below the window while still allowing in daylight. The wood bed frame, crafted by a local woodworker, gives the illusion of a taller ceiling because it’s so low.

Copeland’s MiMo series is a portmanteau for Miami Modernist Architecture, as is revealed in the use of elegant materials alongside minimalist styling. The collection blends wood with metallic details, and is comprised of both solid maple hardwood with a white finish, American black walnut wood, and luxe bronze legs. The juxtaposition of the two hardwoods gives the MiMo Bed added visual interest, while the simple silhouette maintains the minimalist look of the modernist period. A true platform bed, the MiMo is ideal for small rooms, or as a centerpiece in a master suite. Although inspired by Miami modernism, the walnut headboard lends a rich, warm quality to the bed that will communicate with all styles.

"All of these sites have something special. Some of them are quite exposed locations, places that leave visitors speechless when they look into an abyss or find themselves at a fjord or a bay," Schluchtmann says.

With all the add-ons fitted, the Ulaelu cooking platform can be set up to handle the entire cooking process. The base unit starts at just under $2,000. One possible add-on, the sink, features a holder to position your garden hose in place. Used water can be funneled with a hose to a drainpipe or flowerbed.

Along with the main platform, you can order a charcoal grill with a stainless steel cooking grate for preparing meat and vegeables.

Designed with apartment-living and small spaces in mind, the Norm Coat Hanger is a sleek, powder-coated steel coat stand with a small footprint. The top platform can be used to hold a hat, keys, and sunglasses, while the lower platform can prop up a pair of shoes or a bag. Near the top of the stand, there is a hook for hanging jackets, which also extends back to the wall, giving an extra place for draping a scarf or hanging a coat from a hanger.

Mikulionis custom designed the white steel staircase that leads from the living area up to the bedroom platform.

Maple floors with with a white-oil finish were used throughout the home, including at the second-story landing. A Platform Bench by George Nelson offers a more practical alternative to the playful Tatino ball chairs by Baleri Italia.

In the bathroom, the Stylo bar by Alu eliminates the need for space-eating cabinets by creating a vertical tower of platforms on which all the hygienic essentials rest. Generally used in retail displays, the Stylo stretches from floor to ceiling; platforms branch off at various intervals, creating resting spots for toilet paper, shaving gear, toothpaste, soap, and other necessities. The tub is built up from a rubberized plaster by Miracote and finished off with a woven fabric mesh and final layer of All-in-One coating, popular in prisons for its low price and durability.

The couple’s bedroom, occupying a space that was once a machine shop, has a cedar sleeping platform designed and built by Elliot Loh.

Interlocking composite sandwich panels hold the two halves together. The panels have an added styrofoam layer for sound and thermal insulation.

This platform bed is the first of its kind—it is comprised of sixteen layers of North American maple wood that is then framed in a warm North American walnut wood veneer.

Azevedo made the platform bed and side table in her master bedroom, and bartered furniture for the mural by artist friend Mike Stern.
