The news editor of the website Curbed, Patrick Sisson has written about design and music for several publications, including Pitchfork and Chicago Magazine. Formerly based in the Windy City, he toured the Atrium House, located in the Buena Park neighborhood, for this issue. “The area surprised me,” he says. “Just blocks from Wrigley Field, this historic neighborhood had flown under my radar for all the years I’d been living in Chicago. It was gratifying to find something new.” What is your favorite American-made object that you own? “A set of wooden bars and stars my dad made that replicate the design of the Chicago flag.”

For this month’s Energy 360 column on the state of solar power, Patrick DiJusto, a book editor at Make: and the author of This Is What You Just Put In Your Mouth: From Eggnog To Beef Jerkey the Surprising Secrets of What’s Inside Everyday Products, has this to say: “I decided not long ago that solar’s future was at least 20 years away. Doing this piece has convinced me that solar is now.” Favorite piece of furniture: “I try not to play favorites with my furniture. It’s all Swedish (from IKEA), and you know how sulky they can be.”

Based in Chicago, writer Patrick Sisson appreciated the personal touches throughout the Hufft house, especially how the kitchen, living room, and outdoor space flowed together. “While utilizing custom fabrication certainly led to a more personalized home, it was evident that signature touches, like the framed drop cloth on the upper level, went beyond functional to speak to the family’s history and day-to-day lifestyle,” he says.

London's Athenaeum Hotel near Hyde Park features a side living wall designed by well, you guessed it, Patrick Blanc. (Pin).

Riffing on local farmhouses, architects Patrick Walker and Elizabeth Demetriades covered the 4,000-square-foot house in rough-sawn red cedar and capped it with a standing-seam galvalume roof.

Hailey Stoner and Jeremie Patrick pictured with their dog in their new kitchen. The 1,800-square-foot house has four bedrooms, but the couple plan on waiting to renovate the other three.

The caged staircase was designed by architect Patrick Ousey, with whom Flournoy collaborated in the home’s design. Although initially unconvinced by the staircase detail, “it is a great example of how collaboration brings in different perspectives,” says Flournoy.

Eunnice Eun stands in the double-height living area of the McLean, Virginia, home she shares with her husband, Patrick Kim, and their two children. The expanses of glass echo and update the large windows of the 1961 house they demolished to build this one.
