“Everything out here has been something else,” designer Barbara Hill says of Marfa, Texas. It’s certainly true of her casita, which was formerly a grocery store: The 1,200-square-foot home is filled with reworked pieces, including the Elvis artwork she embellished with pink lights fabricated by the Neon Gallery in Houston and the refurbished Bertoia chairs from Cast + Crew. The minimal color palette is echoed in the freestanding Malm fireplace and the concrete floor sculptures by William Vizcarra from Wrong Marfa.
“Everything out here has been something else,” designer Barbara Hill says of Marfa, Texas. It’s certainly true of her casita, which was formerly a grocery store: The 1,200-square-foot home is filled with reworked pieces, including the Elvis artwork she embellished with pink lights fabricated by the Neon Gallery in Houston and the refurbished Bertoia chairs from Cast + Crew. “Opening the house to the southwest also gave the best chance of hearing the ocean noises in the house at night,” says Sabbeth. A Malm Firedrum 3 fireplace anchors the corner, with a cream Piero Lissoni sofa, coffee table by Andrianna Shamaris and leather Cassina chairs placed before it.

Two mustard Crescent swivel chairs and throw pillows from West Elm add a touch of color to the living area. Under the chairs, a steel plate from the original shipping container reminds everyone what the house used to be. The fireplace is Fire Drum 2 by Malm and the firewood holder is by David DeSantis.

UPGRADE YOUR BED: A king size MALM bed is hacked by using infill panels to extend the headboard wall to wall. The headboard is wrapped with foam and finished in a soft grey wool felt. Wall mounted BESTA units frame the bed and serve as night tables.

The original circular brass Malm fireplace sits atop its new tiled platform in the opened up living room. Since the home's setting feels very park-like, the new covered deck—visible just outside the windows—was designed to add year-round living space to the home.

The pink, green, and yellow stripes now reach the skylights and extend over an integrated storage space to the floor. “My husband and I, we both actually hate having a TV visible to guests, but it’s a necessary evil,” says Shawn. “So how do you make that interesting and without it being too busy? [The rainbow stripe] creates an element that draws your eye away.”

Sitting Pretty The ground floor was originally two rooms; now it’s been transformed into one continuous space. To compensate for a low ceiling, Kiely’s team dug into the ground to create a true sunken seating section leading to the garden. Built-in sofas, an Eames rocker, a stool by G Plan, and concrete tiles outfit the space. Kiely chose a neutral charcoal finish for the Malm fireplace to balance the green linoleum floor and her own Rhododendron wallpaper in Sunflower.
