The inspiration for this prefabricated, modular family home on Fishers Island, New York, were the views that Tanney and Luntz saw from a 12-foot stepladder, which was balancing on the bed of a pickup truck when they first visited the site.

Landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand helped fill out the completed prefab by planting sedge grass on one of the house’s two green roofs to reflect the texture of the surrounding meadow.

The firm collaborated with Kountry Kraft and its modular manufacturer, Simplex Homes, to expand the palette of materials, including the teak cabinetry used in the kitchen and dining areas. Interior designer David Bentheim suggested the marble backsplash for the bar area. Antique dining chairs, an LED Aurea pendant lamp by FontanaArte, and a Paolo Piva table from B&B Italia complete the room.

A second green roof is planted with sedum and plays host to one of the family’s favorite spots: a hammock. Bentheim suggested adding a trellis overhead to soften and balance the appearance of the facade.

In the kitchen, teak-and- thermofoil cabinets and Caesarstone countertops mix with Miele appliances—wall ovens, induction cooktop, hood, and microwave—and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The kitchen sink and faucet are by Blanco. The owners, who split their time between Fishers Island and Great Britain, found the vintage pendant lamps at Lassco architectural salvage.

The two-foot-thick stacked stone walls constructed by Reed Hilderbrand nod to the masonry-free walls common in Revolutionary-era New England.

On the rooftop deck is an outdoor fireplace clad in cement board panels, plus a custom wych elm table by Arnold d’Epagnier and Charles Outdoor sofas by B&B Italia.

The Ceramic Subwoofer by Joey Roth extends your system’s frequency response down to 40 Hz. While you will physically feel bass-heavy music, you’ll also notice new richness in vocals and acoustic instruments.

The Sorapot draws attention to the ritual of tea making through the most modern of devices: with stainless steel, borosilicate glass, and silicone. It is both a beautifully made and industrial piece.

The fireplace wall, a Resolution: 4 signature, is made of 14-gauge hot-rolled steel panels with storage components in one-eighth welded steel. On one side is a pivoting privacy panel that allows the guest wing to be closed off. Art attaches to the metal with magnets.

These sculptural ceramic speakers by San Francisco–based product designer Joey Roth made of cork and Baltic birch not only look fantastic, but will beautifully belt out any tune.

Joey’s hideout under the stairs is filled with books and art, like Katie Gong’s mini wood knot.

Architect Fred Fisher’s California residence recalls family memories of la dolce vita.

Designer Joey Roth has introduced a hand-finished steel-and-glass teapot with a spout sieve that allows hot water into the glass steeping chamber while keeping out the leaves when pouring. To brew, you open open the handle to pop out the Pyrex tube. Fill that with leaves, seal it back in the handle, then pour hot water through the spout. When it’s steeped and ready to pour, the sieve on the end keeps the leaves inside.

Bottom line: If coffee-making can be elevated into an art form, why not tea? The pot retails for $285 via Joey Roth (ships November 2014).

“Sorapot 2 is a realization of my original design intent,” Roth says. “It's lighter, its geometry is more subtle and precise, and it uses about half the stainless steel of the first version.” The center tube holds 11 ounces, or about enough for two teacups. The whole rig, without water, weighs roughly three pounds.

Phifer describes the Fishers Island House, designed for Tom and Bunty Armstrong, as “a house that sits in the garden.” It replaced a house that had burned down. “When I arrived, it was just this green plaque of grass that sat there. Tom’s only instruction was that he wanted to sit in his house, looking at his art and at the garden at the same time.”

Kai Table by NuCraft Michigan designer Joey Ruiter, a NeoCon regular whose work has graced the showroom of numerous firms, created this thin-profile conference table with sleek lines and easy adaptability to cords and computers. Named after the Hawaiian word for ocean, it’s a piece that can exude calm in an otherwise stuffy conference room.

The light and airy kitchen features a gently curved hood and island, which echo the design play throughout the house. Appliances by Fisher & Paykel are hidden behind custom fronts for a clean and streamlined aesthetic in what is a functional, but compact, space.
