The home abuts a river, where the residents enjoy kayaking and swimming in warmer months. This geographic blessing partially inspired the wave-like backsplash. Each tile was hand-cut and individually placed by artisans from New Ravenna.

The new kitchen is modern and utilitarian, modest yet open and spacious. The U-shaped counters face the views on one side, and bookended by a skylit wall of hand-cut blue ceramic tile. The long skylight over the back counter helps balance the light from the windows opposite, and gives a warm wash of light over the work space all day long.

The waterfall-edge kitchen island was a non-negotiable for Catherine Williamson, but the piece of marble she found would only cover three-quarters of the length. So, the duo finished off the island with a piece of walnut that was hand-cut for them by a local carpenter. The island also features a Sinkology sink, and the front is finished with DIY wooden dowels that mimic fluted wood.

The circles on the gallery’s wall indicate areas of repair, where small hand-cut stones were used to fill in the gaps between large stones and left exposed. An oversize pendant designed by Angela hangs from the ceiling. It’s made of fibers from the sansevieria (snake) plant that were tinted with a natural dye from a local tree.

"The desk’s sides, legs, stretcher, and drawers are made from solid wood. With the design of the desk, the top could not be made of solid wood otherwise there would be problems with wood movement over time. Each Laura Desk has a top made of plywood with 1/16"-thick, hand-cut solid veneer on its writing surface. Standard veneer, even on premium plywood is less than 1/32" thick, and this wouldn’t last over time. With the thicker veneer, we’re creating an heirloom desk that will last for generations."
