At night, the interior lighting casts the geometric window framing in silhouette.

Four bedrooms occupy the bottom level. The beds are by Modernica and a Womb chair by Eero Saarinen sits in the corner.

A relaxing couch from Thrive sits before a mahogany-encased fireplace. Just beyond it, a hidden sliding door opens to a screened-in porch, furnished with a patio set from Knoll. "This further connects the house to the landscape and blurs the distinction between interior and exterior, making it feel much like a treehouse," Hammer says.

"The typical Cape Cod house built by early settlers had very few windows, as they were built to survive a harsh winter," Hammer explains. The architect emulated their recognizable form with a 9/12 pitched gable roof but added plenty of contemporary glazing for natural light and ventilation.

Varying types of wood make up the home's interior: white oak planks for the floor, solid mahogany for the cabinets, and fir for the ceilings, beams, columns, and trim.

Keeping their home office addition modern, clean, and uncluttered was Ann and Geoff Woolford’s top priority.

The couple chose soft green and cream to complement the warm material palette of their new space. The colors serve as a calming counterpoint to the sleek forms of the built-ins and the geometricity of the rectangular space and gabled roof.

The couple asked for a “no maintenance, not low maintenance” backyard. The pixelated shelving system, made of birch and acid-etched mirrored glass, as well as the cantilevered desk, were customized for the Woolford’s space. A large glass sliding door framed in white oak separates the addition from the rest of the home. The chairs are from Ikea.

In the master bath, sandblasted windows let in light while retaining privacy. The tub is from Dado, the vanity and stool are from Ligne Roset, and the Big Bang light is from Foscarini.

Present Architects relied on warm-toned materials for the addition, using white birch for the cantilevered desk and white stained oak for the floors. The warm palette not only makes for a calm, open interior space, but provides context for the rest of the house.

The architects chose standard Marvin units for the windows, which was essential to remaining within a small budget. The wide windows and skylight span almost the entire length of two walls in the office, allowing for ample natural light during daytime hours and open garden views.

As a scientist with a manufacturing background, Mr. Woolford had precise requirements for the office built-ins. Transferring the contents of two existing bookshelves, as well as adding space for objects for display and six vertical filing cabinets, was no easy feat, nor was integrating electrical outlets and telephone and data connections. However, the architects at Present found an approach that served the Woolfords’ needs and remained visually appealing.

These wood-wrapped spaces take oriented strand board to new heights.

Located on a remote and steeply sloped plot in the forest, the Warp House takes cues from Cape Cod’s low-impact, experimental midcentury houses—such as the nearby Hatch Cottage by Jack Hall.

This 460 square foot addition to a Cape Cod home houses adds much needed space for additional family members.

The sunken bathtub in George Nakashima’s Sanso Villa mimics the shape of a swimming pool on the grounds. His daughter, Mira Nakashima, took over the studio after his death and now lives and works on the property. “A Japanese garden often has a central pond derived from the character for ‘heart’ or ‘spirit,’ and this may be an abstraction of that character,” she says of the tub’s sculptural form.

Though we love the custom teak-and-steel sink, shelving, shower caddy, mirror, shower, and vanity by Pat Carson Studio, the real coup of this bathroom is that the window at left goes from transparent to opaque with the touch of a button. The Duo Poliert dispensers beneath the shelf are from Blomus. A toilet opposite the sink is from Toto.

Backless picnic-style benches stand in for chairs at the refinished Milwaukee Public Library table where the family eats their meals. The sofa and armchair are from Luminaire.

Like many traditional Japanese bathrooms, Wilkin and Pini’s is clad almost entirely in wood.

In the living room, the architects painted the limestone fireplace a dark shade of blue-green. The walnut coffee table is by Noguchi for Herman Miller. The Barcelona chair is by Mies van der Rohe.

Cape Cod style home has unexpected charm & style

Each of the three rooms references a decade and is named for a film from that era. The master bedroom, named for Dušan Makavejev's 1971 film W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism, celebrates films once banned by the government for dealing with taboo topics.

Custom hammered-copper tiles add texture and reflect light in the master bedroom. The bed, steel-and-walnut side tables, and brass lamps are all custom-made by Cécile & Boyd’s.

In the master bedroom, a woven Loom chair by Matteograssi is paired with a wood-and-marble side table from Cécile & Boyd’s. Sliding glass doors lead to the screened outdoor veranda with a custom bronze table and Neutra Batyline chairs from Marlanteak. “The outside-inside flow was important to us, as the apartment is all about views and using the veranda spaces,” says designer Geordi De Sousa Costa.
