The Brook, a supportive housing building in the Bronx, occupies what had, for years, been a vacant lot. The green roof, pictured here, is one of a number of LEED-driven elements.

“Do you really like your building?” the Brook’s director, Paul Pavon, was asked by an acquaintance, who compared the appearance of the 90,000- square-foot supportive housing development in New York’s famously blighted South Bronx to that of the Tetris video game. Indeed he does: “If you walk around this neighborhood, not too many buildings look like this. So there’s some kind of pride when the tenants come home.”

Designed by TEN Arquitectos, this casita will be built in the Willis Avenue Community Garden in the Bronx. The idea is that it will serve as a model to be adapted for community gardens elsewhere in New York City. Rendering courtesy of TEN Arquitectos.

Alexander Levi and Amanda Schachter of SLO Architecture plan to convert an underused patch of land along the elevated Six subway line in the Bronx into a waterfront amenity.

A masonry head house on the site, designed in 1908 by architect Cass Gilbert, has not been in use for over 80 years. SLO will connect the structure to the waterfront by constructing a steel bridge over the active Amtrak tracks.
