New balconies were constructed to complement the scale of the adjacent openings. The second story balcony was conceptualized as an extension of the room to the street. It can be closed when privacy is required, but opened to the street or terrace for interaction with the natural surroundings. The metallic blinds create dynamic shadow patterns as the light changes throughout the day.

The Turnalux wood-slat blind system by Eric Fonville for Wood and Washi. You might think there is no innovation to be found in the blinds game. You are wrong! This system is perfect for renters, because it requires no drilling. The slats are independent of one another (which means they are direction-agnostic) and they are manipulated by hand—no cords, so it’s child-friendly. Lastly it’s customizable, meaning you can specify the dimensions of the slats themselves.

To create a low-energy house, several passive environmental strategies have been incorporated into the home, including a heated floor system and exterior automated wood blinds. All the interior woodwork, including the bed and staircase drawers, was custom-made by Blind Interieur.

Venetian blinds were installed on the exterior of the windows to mitigate heat.

In contrast to the glazed writer's studio, the hunting blind is punctuated by two thin windows.

When the blinds are up, the owners can take in the Old Southwest neighborhood from their bed, a custom design.

The hunting blind is a small and square room, furnished with a cowhide rug, two guest chairs, and a hunting bar.

Barzel Ironworks fabricated the banister to Sawatzky’s design by slicing up iron pipe, welding it, and painting it.

The Pierre Frey mural of an 18th-century French countryside scene is visible to passersby when the blinds are open. The bottom half is clad in ribbed tambour wood giving the space a more modern feel.

One of the best ways to combat the grime in between window blinds, hinges, etc. is with a sponge or cloth that has been dampened in either mild soapy water or a mixture of vinegar, water, and baking soda.

The Burkes eliminated glare by minimizing the number of windows on the east and west sides of their house. On the south, though, windows are taller and offer views of trees even though the house is in the heart of downtown Charlottesville. The direct light that enters through the flanks of the house is mediated via a sophisticated array of blinds, tints, a trellis calibrated to cut light from April through August, and several bald cypress trees that provide shade in summer but lose their leaves in winter, allowing light (and heat) to infuse the house. Baby cypress trees, about nine feet tall, should cost around $100 each at your local nursery.

According to architect Johanne Taugbøl, the firm nicknamed the project Stairway to Heaven because of this long staircase topped with a south-facing window. "At certain times of the day and year, you might be blinded by the light flooding in from the south," said Taugbøl.

The home incorporates a number of sustainable features. Glass walls are protected by concrete eave overhangs and automated external sun blinds. In addition, the heavily insulated walls, floors, and ceiling (with roof garden layers) add to the efficient energy performance of the home.
