Shelly walks along the perimeter of the house, near the central living area. The design of the house, with its many rooms, nooks, and open family spaces, "was so ahead of its time," Shelly says, "that, to young people coming here, it still feels contemporary."

“Design is not about objects. It’s about relationships,” she said. “Design should appeal to the humanity and imagination of the viewer.” During her presentation she talked at length about her work for KLM, the Dutch Airline. In addition to creating a new business class cabin interior, she also repurposed a mountain of discarded flight attendant uniforms and respun the yarn for the carpet. She also shared her design process for establishing the new color family that would work with KLM’s established dark blue hues. “Color changes when you are above the clouds,” she said. For all its hard environmental work, one of the most immediate of the Blue Sky Home’s pleasures is how it sits so snugly in its desert surroundings.

The house is seamlessly integrated into the landscape, at once blending in and sticking out. The exterior cleverly mirrors its surroundings in tone and texture. Solar panels are discretely tucked into the dunes next to the house, and passive building techniques maximize energy efficiency and improve insulation. Wood was favored as both structural and finish material, due to its longevity, recyclability, beauty when aged, and favorable acoustic qualities. Furthermore, since it does not react with salt, wood naturally shields the sea-bordering home from the elements.

The balcony is notable for its outdoor shower.

In addition to the public garden, each unit has its own private plot.

The master bathroom has its own open-air patio that faces the street.

In our May issue, we profiled the OSU Knowlton School of Architecture and their entry to the Decathlon was one of my favorites, both inside and out. The home's living spaces are organized around a central core, hence the name of the project, the enCORE. The house is shielded by an attractive extruded polycarbonate rain screen that protects the home from the elements and increases the home's R-value, a measure of thermal resistance; the screens also hide the angled solar panels. Wexler and Harrison's original plan was to create affordable vacation homes for a growing middle class. When this home first went on the market with the others in 1962, it was competitively priced between $13,000 and $17,000. Today, the kitchen has been restored following guidelines from its original configuration, and the landscaping was updated in 2001 with Wexler's oversight.
