“It was important to site the house in such a way that it had views to both the field and the forest, but it also wasn’t visible from the main road,” says Lewis. VELUX skylights bring extra light into the home.
A freestanding Antonio Lupi tub defines the updated master bath, which also features an open-plan layout and a skylight by Velux.
Large windows by Alumilex and an operable Velux skylight—with built-in rain sensor to automatically close it in case of unexpected showers—flood the home with light. A glass wall surrounding the staircase reflects a chalk mural by artist Tyson Bodnarchuk.
The sleeping loft features a Velux skylight. Structural insulated panels by Vantem keep heating costs down in almost any climate.
Velux skylights open the extension further. A wood stove by Max Blanks warms the area between the living room and kitchen when the sun is hidden.
The antenna of Claude Vasconi’s TDF television tower is visible through the Velux skylight architects Caroline Djuric and Mirco Tardio added to a family house in France. “It’s very French, very angular,” Djuric says of the renovation. The light fixture was found at a brocante, or vintage market.
At the entry looking upward towards a Velux skylight, a vertical "sleeve" is made of stacked end grain plywood. The theme of vertical and horizontal architectural elements providing different environmental perspectives carries through to the rest of the home. Horizontal forms look out to the lake, while the vertical columns look up the sky.

The minimalist bathroom boasts Cararra marble surfaces, Hansgrohe faucets and shower fixtures, and a skylight by Velux.
Energy-efficient VELUX windows have been installed in the south-facing glazed wall.
The clients and design team chose to forego an open floor plan in favor of defined, separated spaces. In this scheme, the vertically oriented spaces act as a cinematic "hard-cut" to their horizontal counterparts. The custom hot rolled steel kitchen, one of these vertical transition spaces, receives light from above through a Velux skylight. A GE Profile Induction cooktop and oven and Miele refrigerator complete the space.
The white-washed Baltic birch plywood coffered ceiling is fitted with Velux skylights that bathe the work room in natural light.
The sofa and dining chairs are from IKEA. The solar refrigerator is from EcoSolarCool. A ladder leads to the loft, where a solar-powered skylight from Velux is fitted with a rain sensor.
A Velux skylight above the sleeping loft includes remote-controlled integrated blinds. The prefab unit can sleep up to four people between the bed loft and the lower-level daybed.
To create a spacious feel, Martin installed large, double-glazed windows and a Velux skylight. "The windows, together with the operable skylight, act as a solar chimney to passively cool the space," he notes.
In the bathroom behind the closet, Samantha embedded charcoal in the stucco for a velvety texture. Skylights by Velux introduce patterns throughout the day. “I wanted to focus the light in very precise ways,” says Samantha.
Six sloping Velux skylights flood the hallway with light. “We like the shadow coming through the roof above the skylights,” says Kramer.
Sunlight streams into Reinhold and Verena’s loft through Velux skylights in the pitched roof. Reinhold fastened hairpin legs to an old table to create a desk, pairing it with a bentwood chair. The untreated spruce floorboards—many of which are a foot wide and 14 feet long—come from a stand of trees on the property and were milled on-site. The walls are coated in a custom lime-based paint.
Across from it, a Murphy bed by Resource Furniture—lined with Camilla Meijer wallpaper and featuring a customized niche—allows the space to function as a guest room. An electric Velux skylight frames views of the original tin plates above. The architects chose to leave space between the top of the structure and the ceiling to maintain the rectangular proportions of the loft. “It reads right away,” Singer says of the volume. “It’s very satisfying.”

Velux skylights open the home's interior to natural light, and the couple cut a hole in the second level so that the sun's rays could reach all the way through the home.
Because of the mirrored interior, the VELUX Group placed the roof windows towards the northeast in an effort to minimize any direct light, and hence uncomfortable heat, within the studio.
Four new Velux skylights wash the Kitchen and Great Room in light. The walk-in pantry located adjacent to the kitchen houses all the small appliances, allowing the kitchen to stay clutter-free.

The 3rd floor loft offers space for an extra guest and plenty of built-in storage. The Velux solar-powered, rain-sensing skylight above makes bedtime into star gazing time.
Sterling windows let light in the front facade, and a Velux skylight illuminates a loft in the main bedroom, which Eva uses to relax and meditate. “It’s a big space,” Eva says, “so I think it needed to be lightened up.”
The front door, located between the kitchen and dining room, opens into the Great Room. New Velux skylights illuminate the kitchen and flood the room with natural light all day. Integrated appliances by Fisher Paykel blend seamlessly into the cabinetry.
