In the living room, spare Scandinavian design takes center stage. Hans Wegner’s Wishbone chairs surround an Essay dining table by Cecilie Manz for Fritz Hansen; a mostly wood palette is enhanced by slate-gray brick around the fireplace. The paper lanterns throughout the home are a mixture of classics by Isamu Noguchi alongside those picked up in Japan and France.

This dwelling joins a number of structures—such as a boathouse and guesthouse—owned by one family and used for vacations. They needed a new house to accommodate new generations at the reatreat.

The clients had an impressive collection of Scandinavian midcentury teak furniture that now pops beautifully against the concrete floors, white-painted brick, and pine v-joint walls.

A palette of wood, concrete, and painted brick forms a neutral backdrop for Kathryn Tyler’s vintage treasures, including a $30 dining table, $3 poster, and a set of 1950s Carl Jacobs Jason chairs she snagged on eBay for $400.

Life for the couple centers on an open kitchen-dining-living area. Nautical references are kept to a minimum, but a few touches nod toward the home’s habitat. A Rais wood-burning stove recalls a ship’s furnace; soft green and blue fiberglass Eames chairs echo the color of the sea, which is a constant presence thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The custom dining table sits beneath a sculptural Titania pendant by Alberto Meda. Their yellow Labrador, Buster, rests next to a Hay sofa.

At the Scandinavian pavilion, Birds by Oiva Toikka for Iittala were displayed alongside a Vallila rug.

The Blues Are Still Blue Grinding down the concrete floor was too costly, so the Benoits had it painted blue with inexpensive Benjamin Moore latex floor-and-patio paint and then sealed with Zinsser shellac—a natural, nontoxic product that brushes on and can be easily touched up. Dwell on Design is once again inviting Scandinavian designers, furniture and technology companies, and product manufacturers, such as Marimekko (whose sleek pitcher is pictured here), to share their latest creations and concepts.

"Overall, it is important to me to build in change into the kitchens I design. Via fabrics, artwork, and useful storage on shelves and elsewhere, this kitchen can change its look easily," Serra says. "Wall cabinets can be hung and later removed as desired as well. This kitchen is very flexible."

Serra's design firm, Bornholm Kitchen, creates custom cabinetry, which is fabricated in Pennsylvania. For this conceptual space, she opted for robust solid walnut with an oil finish. "The oil finish is easily refreshed," she says. "Scratches can easily be rubbed out with sandpaper and if the surface is re-oiled, it looks like new. Every so often, years down the road, the cabinetry can be lightly sanded and re-oiled—or just re-oiled—for a brand-new look, which is extremely rare in kitchen cabinetry."

Serra sourced the handwoven vintage runner in front of the cooking area from Europe. For her Scandinavian Made business, she travels to Scandinavia to scout for rugs and ceramics from small artisans or from vintage shops. The refrigerator is by Sub-Zero Wolf.

For the sink area, Serra specified American Standard's Orchard Apron sink in white. The faucet, also by American Standard, is the pull-down Fresno Culinary model. Muuto's Fluid pendant light is suspended from the ceiling.

Inspired by Scandinavian tradition and the short daylight hours of the Northern climate, the Lup Candleholder brings warmth and light into the home. The minimal construction creates a continuous line and minimal form.

Update your entryway with the elegant Georg Bench, designed by Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm for Skagerak. A celebration of the designer’s Nordic roots, the bench is crafted from solid oak and features softly turned, splayed legs, an inviting wool cushion, and a luxe leather cord.

The new office makes the most of the exposed brick, tall ceilings, and large southfacing windows. "Because we are based in New York, we don’t have a ton of space," says Dots co-founder Patrick Moberg. "We wanted a clean, thoughtfully designed place to build and play games." Murphy interpreted these wishes into an aesthetic she describes as "traditional American office meets Scandinavian home."

The Norm Dinnerware Collection for Copenhagen restaurant Höst is defined by its simple silhouettes, evocative color palette, and versatility. It includes plates, bowls, and glassware.

The Mod Drops arrangement of tiles has a Scandinavian sensibility.

Best Scandinavian retail representation: Los Angeles-based A+R does a brisk business as one of America's leading online retailers for Scandinavian design (Muuto, Normann Copenhagen). They're also a mainstay at Dwell on Design (for good reason!).

The drawer fronts of the sideboard from the Remix collection were modeled after Scandinavian sailboats.

SHED embraced the angled corners with custom cabinetry. According to Hale, the inspiration images that the couple chose were “less American Midwest farmhouse, and more contemporary Scandinavian farmhouse,” which inspired the design team to consult Scandinavian farm layouts for the master plan.
