"The 10th Arrondissement has a very youthful and hip style to it, and we wanted each space to compliment that vibe," Mekhayech says. "We also fed off the multiculturalism that is Paris, playing subtle tributes throughout to certain ideals. It’s a real eclectic mix and we try to blend in all the colors, styles and fabrics."

"Hosteling was always based on the personal sharing of information and great experiences—we wanted the design to play into that ethos," says Mekhayech. In addition to guest rooms, the Generator Paris has different bars, cafes, and restaruants within its walls.

"The mission is about offering a cool, easy experience right from the online presence (check-in) all the way through to getting to your bed. Great design, amazing people, good food and an awesome shower. It’s about not being too fussy and having all the core elements that people value while identifying the elements that are excessive and drive the price up."

Located in the 10th arrondissement, the Generator Paris hostel offers design-savvy budget accommodations. Under the creative direction of Anwar Mekhayech of the Toronto firm Design Agency, a 1985 office building was gutted and transformed. "The overarching goal or narrative was to create a journey of spaces that were all different and unexpected, keeping with the brand style of industrial undertones matched with creative moments and bold moves," Mekhayech says.

That's where Pair's founder and CEO, Andrew Kemendo, was stationed as an Air Force officer. He was a project manager responsible for outfitting new facilities: a job that demands precise spatial planning. With some prior coding experience, he built a prototype program in 2011.

Over the next few years he and Pair's CTO Taylor Clark tweaked and grew the app until its launch last November. Now the company has partnered with Herman Miller, IKEA, Vitra, Opendesk, and others to put their furniture at your fingertips.

Pair's premise is simple: open the app on your iPhone or iPad, aim its camera to the room, select a furniture model, and drag it onto the screen. Unlike other apps, Pair let's you walk around the room while keeping the furniture in place. This lets you intuitively understand a layout as it would be seen and used.

Of course, as with any seamless technology, it's easy to miss the complex systems working behind the scenes. However, Pair's complex algorithms didn't get their start at a software or architecture company, but rather at a U.S. Air Force base in Guam.

Stratflex Skin (single and double seater) by Wintec Innovation-The East London company's founder, Al Stratford, began working as a builder straight out of high school. Decades later, his practical experience earned him the right to take the qualifying exams (which he passed) to become a licensed architect. He's applied his know-how to develop these chairs out of plywood and local salinga wood. Skin ships flat--but all in one piece, with unique bendy bits that provide texture and color as well as stability once assembled.

This ingenious mug handily brings together what is, perhaps, the greatest, most comforting, and perfectly delicious duo of our time: tea and biscuits. Eliminate the need for a pesky plate and just stick your cookies beneath your brew and you're good to go.

Sheep skin stools by Gerður Guðmundsdóttir-A graduate from IADT Tampa, Guðmunsdóttir pays homage to Mies van der Rohe but creates pieces that are distinctly Icelandic. For her DesignMarch submissions, she accepted a challenge from her uncle to work with Icelandic sheep skin, famous for its long outer coat. The result, a bench and a set of stools showing the versatility of the material. "I love the raw and wildness of the natural uncut sheepskin,” Guðmunsdóttir told me. “I made a bench using that, and went the opposite direction for a completely different but complimentary look for the stools with cut sheepskin." Having found a 100-acre farm in Ontario featuring rolling corn fields, the residents asked architect Cindy Rendely to design a place that was "comfortable and modern and appropriate for the country." Though technically all one space, the living room, dining room, and kitchen are separated by the double-sided fireplace.
