The Grace Farms Foundation—a faith-based non-profit organization that supports social justice endeavors, the arts, and community initiatives—commissioned the Japanese architecture firm SANAA to design a multipurpose structure dubbed "the River." Set to open in fall 2015, the building will be the firm's first completed project in the United States since winning the Pritzker Prize in 2010. Funding for the $60 million project came from individual gifts.

The "dining and living" room will have a 300-person capacity and features a coffee bar. Views of the surroundings abound through the floor-to-ceiling double-pane glass walls. The panels will be joined by a special spacer that masks the seams.

The 86,000-square-foot structure will hold a 700-person ampitheater, a library, a dining area, communial "living" room, and gym/recreation center. Environmental sensitivity was paramount to Grace Farms and a number of grean features will be incorporated: high-efficiency mechanical, electrical, and lighting systems; energy-efficient glazing; a reflective aluminum roof to reduce heat absorbtion; and water-conservation measures. The building is housed under a continual roof and slopes down a 38-foot grade.

Grace Farms is located in New Canaan, Connecticut, about 4.5 miles north of the Glass House. The 75-acre site was formerly used for agriculture and now it will function as greenspace that's open to the public. The organization sought to create a structure that would help people "experience nature, foster community, explore faith, and pursue [social] justice." To that end, SANAA devised an elegant glass structure that hugs the site's natural topography and wends its way through the meadows like a natural river. The goal was to make the building become a part of the landscape. "It can be at once majestic with gardens and long views, while at the same time very personal with shelter and places for meditation," SANAA wrote in its statement of intent. Olin Studio and Larry Weaner Landscape Associates are working on a plan to enhance the site's natural characteristics.

An existing barn on the site will be converted into classrooms.

Grace created a workspace by attaching a piece of maple to Floyd legs. The work area also doubles as a kitchen table.

German photographer Thomas Demand captured Farm 56, an image of a pile of building plans, which will be showcased as part of Grace Farms’s public art program.

The parents’ living room is graced by an elegant Fritz Hansen PK80 chaise lounge, and it has a view of the generations-old persimmon tree.

The bedrooms are graced with headboards that The Vanguard Theory created with vintage Tori Richard prints. The dreamy framed surf photography on the wall is by She Hit Pause Studios.

In line with Grace’s desire to embrace nature, the aluminum hull of the Airstream doesn’t detract for its surroundings—its reflective nature allows it to blend right into the landscape wherever the couple parks it.

The Langs use an outbuilding as a rec room of sorts. "We call that the Grace Studio," Lang says. "It's designed so a car can pull in there, but we use it as more of a rec room and work space."

Post-renovation, wooden shutters and elongated windows now grace the facade.

Artist-in-residence Grace Hawthorne hosted a Paper Punk fold-a-thon, in which attendees created a paper metropolis that grew over three days.

For this rural Scottish family residence, Architect Andrew McAvoy created an earth-sheltered house with a Grace & Webb fabricated laser-cut steel balcony with artistic reed-like patterns that adds a distinctive decorative element to the facade.
