Jansen and Dellensen extend the principles of pop-up design beyond retail. Approached in 2009 to design an office for an ad agency that was planning to use the space for only two years, i29 embraced the momentariness of the situation. Instead of shipping in expensive, site-specific decor, they sourced all the furniture locally through charity shops and online auction houses. Jansen refers to the project as their “pop-up office.”

Reminiscent of a shade that Lou’s grandfather, an advertising creative, liked to use in his work, the red of the Fred Meyer barstools matches the Bluestar range. A pair of steel-wrapped vents rise from the fir plywood millwork, built by Schuchart/Dow.

In the master bedroom, a Hästens bed is paired with an AJ sconce by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen. A vintage poster for the 1968 French film Stolen Kisses is a nod to Fabian’s career in advertising, as well as the time period in which the apartment was built.

The couple's firm specializes in illustration and photography for the advertising industry. The framed art is by Anthony Burrill and the wall calendar is the work of Crispin Finn. The Ikea office table is ringed by Fritz Hansen Butterfly Chairs and Herman Miller Aeron Chairs. The lighting is by Artemide.

In the yard, custom billboards illuminated by spotlights can be changed regularly and can be printed by any local sign printer (in this case, by Lamar Advertising).

Lalita stands in front of the coffee nook in the couple’s kitchen—one of several details that relates to their shared Brazilian heritage. Her childhood was split between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, while Fabio grew up in São Paulo before moving to various cities around the world as part of his career in advertising.

Velloso worked in advertising before deciding to devote his time to furniture design.

The second and third floors—all in black and white—highlighted different themes organized by neighborhood (Wilshire and Century City) and commission (residential and advertising). Ane Rodriguez, who worked as a coordinator at ARCOmadrid, was amazed at the difference of styles represented in Shulman's work, noting that she hadn't thought much of L.A. as a destination for Art Deco architecture until she'd seen buildings like the Bullock's Department Store.
