Located north of London in Gringley on the Hill, the award-winning Ellicar Show Pool is a permanent and private natural pool that serves as a showpiece for Ensata. Marrying home cooking and an archaeological field trip, Mas de la Pyramide in Bouches-du-Rhône is probably the world’s only restaurant found in an ancient Roman quarry. For proprietor and chef Lolo Mauron, the caves are both his business and his birthright. Lolo, 92, has spent his entire life here, surrounded by an incredible hodgepodge of old farm tools, collectible cars, and other bric-à-brac from the caverns’ history.

New York City boasts only two Frank Lloyd Wright structures: the Guggenheim Museum, and this modest prefab on Staten Island. The Cass House was built according to the Prefab #1 plan he designed for Erdman's prefab company. According to the New York Times, "It was built late in his life from a plan for prefab moderate-cost housing. The components were made in a Midwest factory and shipped to Staten Island for construction under the supervision of a Wright associate, Morton H. Delson... This Iwi prefab was designed by architects Juan Ruiz and Amelia Tapia for anyone looking to add a flexible space to their property. With a timber frame clad in cork and waterproof canvas stitched into wood ribbing, it expands like an accordion to a total of roughly 92 square feet. When compressed, it becomes a 26-square-foot roofed hutch.

Before: John and Kelly Rainey bought a 92-acre ranch in Texas Hill Country in 2012, which came with this 1908 cabin. It is thought to have originally been a kit home that was so modified over the years, it looked more East Coast than Texas Hill Country. The couple worked with Jobe Corral Architects to strip away the changes that didn’t fit with the cabin’s historic character, such as the excess trim, decorative columns, and brickwork on the exterior.

The University of Maryland took home the first place in the Decathlon with their WaterShed design that was inspired by the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. The Chesapeake has long been fraught with water quality issues and this home attempts to quell future pollution by filtering wastewater produced by its inhabitants. I really liked the fact that the students thought of the home as a compete ecosystem and tackled local environmental issues.
