If $138 (or $78 for a paring knife) isn’t ideal, you can just as easily spend far less on a solid 8-inch chef’s knife—Victorinox’s Fibrox is a steal at $40. Less expensive models, however, are bound to have a shorter lifespan.

Detroit's Lafayette Park—the first urban-renewal project in the United States—constitutes the world's largest collection of buildings designed by Mies van der Rohe. Completed in 1959, the 78-acre complex is not as well known as some of Mies' other projects. However, it deserves recognition as it still remains a vibrant neighborhood, even being more than 50 years old.

At the age of 78, Massimo Vignelli designed the interiors for Manhattan Italian restaurant SD26 with his wife and partner Lella. Of his first New York City restaurant design, Vignelli said the point was "seduction": "It’s like high heels: It’s not to get higher, it’s to feel more seductive." The Vignellis tapped longtime friend, artist Sheila Hicks, to create fiber art for the interior, which adds an element of tactility to the sleek space.
