The iconic shell chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948 and frequently knocked-off since. Today Herman Miller makes the shell from 100% recyclable polypropylene (a.k.a. molded plastic), a more eco-friendly option than the original fiberglass.

This open-concept Amsterdam loft features soaring 15-foot ceilings, an Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and a Jielde light. Throughout the home, Standard Studio architects Wouter Slot and Jurjen van Hulzen favored raw materials, including concrete, oiled oak, and hot-rolled steel, all of which complemented the original space's industrial feel. Tucked smartly underneath the loft, a compact home office features functional built-in shelving and an Eames DSR chair.

The LCW debuted in 1946, when it caused a stir at national design festivals.

Each Eames Notebook in Whitbread Wilkinson’s series includes a graphic design from Charles and Ray Eames. The Numbers pattern notebook, shown here, includes 120 pages and an elastic band to keep the notebook secured. The eye-catching pattern will make a bold visual statement on a desktop or console table.

Originally intended as a play structure for the couple's daughter, the tea house instead became an office, stocked with Charles and Ray Eames-designed furniture in honor of the nearby Eames House.

Located in Los Angeles' Pacific Palisades neighborhood, The Eames House, also known as Case Study House No. 8, is a landmark of midcentury modern architecture. Constructed in 1949 by husband-and-wife Charles and Ray Eames, they lived in the home—which served as both their home and studio—until their deaths. Charles in 1978 and Ray, ten years to the day, in 1988.

The Eames House restoration involved replacing deteriorated materials and adding a museum-quality climate control system. The timing coincided with an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in which the entire contents of the living room were on view. The historically sensitive restoration and museum exhibition has received considerable media attention, including a lengthy New York Times interview with Ice Cube.

In true mid-century fashion, a George Nelson Bubble Lamp is paired with an Eames Lounge by Charles and Ray Eames in a corner of the living room. The glass walls and mitered corner are original features of architect Saul Zaik’s 1956 design.

“The kitchen didn’t really have a home,” says Colkitt. His solution was to build the sleeping loft directly above it, giving the kitchen some architectural congruity, and implement recessed lighting into the dropped ceiling, also the underside of the floor of the sleeping loft. In the living room Daphne the dog keeps company with a Case Study Day Bed from Modernica, a LCM chair by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, and a painting by the Brooklyn artist Joyce Kim.

“We didn’t go out and buy a living room collection,” Sofie explains. “In our home, we tried to avoid trends. The furniture we have are things we have collected over many, many years.” Vintage Eames for Herman Miller lounge chair; Isamu Nuguchi table; and Rocking elephant by Rocking Zoo.

By creating a desk out of roof beams, this home office perfectly integrates into an open-plan renovation of a Northern Italian farmhouse.

A pair of Molded Plywood lounge chairs by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller sit opposite a BoConcept coffee table and a sofa of Paul’s design. For his father’s book collection, Paul created a library around the double-height staircase.

The dining table, made from a single piece of teak, is a little over 13 feet long and was custom made for the space. It can seat up to 24.

In the living room, an Eames lounge chair is matched with a Richard Conover–designed fiberglass chair in similar proportions. A custom coffee table by Asher Israelow com-plements the industrial lighting by Workstead, affixed to walls painted in Farrow and Ball’s Manor House Gray. The sliding doors leading into the home office were fabricated by Markus Bartenschlager.

The study features floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that bring the outdoors in. Space-saving custom walnut desks are accented by a Pixo Optical LED Table Lamp, an AJ table lamp, and a 1958 Eames Management Chair.

Production today continues in much the same way.

The Miller House and Garden features a custom-made sofa in the open-plan living area designed by Saarinen with textiles by Girard. The home was widely published and is in part credited for the popularity of conversation pits in the 1950s and 1960s.
